New to drumming...need help in gear selection!

Hi peeps, I want to buy an electric drumset, around the mid-ranged level. Not into acoustics for now as I don't really have space for that. I'm not exactly a drummer, more of a guitarist actually...I wanna play drums when I'm having a break from the guitars.

My price range would be around 800. My preferable set up would be 1 snare, 2 toms (High and Low, of course), 2 cymbals, 1 crash and 1 ride, if that is of any importance.

Really appreciate any help given, thanks in advance!

yamaha dtexpress?
Not sure.. the cheapest one...
But i never fancied electronic set.
Goes for around 1.2k-1.4k new? IM NOT SURE! hahaha. no pedal and throne if im not wrong too...
Second hand u can try $600-$800... yeap.

or you can get a pearl rhythm traveller, takes up lesser space than a conventional drumset would and you could change it to muffle heads too. :p also at 800 you could easily get one ..

Thanks for all the links guys, but I can't use an acoustic one due to the loudness. The cymbals would probably irritate the living crap outta my parents.

I saw some threads talking about a medeli? But the reviews are very mixed...also, do I need any extra amplifiers to produce a sound or are they usually included?

Mmm yamaha sometimes give free sometimes dont. haha. WHY AM I ALWAYS ABOUT YAMAHA. ahhahahaha. but acoustic set.. the sound much nicer:)

also if u dont mind getting secondhand, maybe u could try this http://soft.com.sg/forum/drums-buy-sell/180182-wts-pearl-rhythm-traveler-cymbals-stands.html i don't know about you but i think its a steal, not that im affiliated to the seller in anyway.. =)

you can try the Pearl Rhythm Traveller kit. like what Chaserr said, it has the muffled heads so that noise level can be kept to its minimal! About the cymbals, you can easily get cymbal mutes either secondhand here (Buy/Sell section) or from Ranking or Swee lee! The link Chaserr mentioned is a pretty good deal!
Good luck! :D

umh.. i dun play drums this is what my drummer did.. He had a acoustic drum set at his apartment. But since cymbals are very noisy (u can use cymbal mutes though) , he uses splashes instead. Cymbals sound much nice than splashes. But for amateur drummer it should be fine i guess.

lokiregnarok: splashes sound better than cymbals?

Chope... splashes are small cymbals which are 6"-12"/13"...
They are still cymbals...
You will be surprised, splashes quite loud too! very sharp. Distinct sound:)

Hi all once again, I've decided on electronic drums...does anyone have any experience with a Medeli DD-506 and an Alesis DM6?

If you want a mid-end drum set, not a low end one, buy a td-9kx that is all mesh pads for $4.2k at swee lee, or a td-9k which is rubber and mesh pads for $3k or a roland td4kx which is all mesh but the high and mid toms is only 6.5 inch and its very hard for you to aim and the sensor is at the side of the pads so the sensitivity is lousy for $2.5k.

But td-4 has only 125 sounds, td-9 has 522 sounds, 50 drum kit, 50 songs for you to play along and td9 allow u to filter the songs by actually allowing you to choose whether u only want the bass lines of the song or just the guitar or just the drums, in addition, u can custom your cymbals from 1 inch to 40 inch and custom your snare, toms, bass depth and size.
Yamaha dtxpress 4 special has a 3 zone rubber snare pads, 3 cymbals, i hi hat that can be mount on a hi hat stand but it costs $2.9k at yamaha.

TD12kx has 566 sounds and so does the td20k.
TD20kx has 922 sounds and it is the best model in roland e drums.

i started with yamaha dtxplorer (i got a pedal with it free) + Vic Firth 5B, no drum throne (no $$$) just a plastic stool.

i stay in an apt, my neighbours will scream if i got an acoustic kit...
