New Old Stuff

Touch - The arrangement lacks structure and doesn't go anywhere. There is no tension and release here at all, no build up, no contrast.

The mix here needs a lot of work as well. There is an annoying midi-gated sound that comes at seemingly random places that is too loud and then stops very abruptly. The drums are mixed too low and sound like you only use a single drum loop. Try programming your own drums with fills, variations and ghost notes. If you are using loops then slice them up and rearrange them. The rest of the mix is kind of muddy and lacks definition between the different sounds.

Love Fells Good - This sounds like General Midi trite. Your compositional ideas might be ok but if you are going to sequence stuff like this and make it bearable then you need to add dynamics and nuance to the performance. Read up a little on using Midi CC's to add some interest to your midi sequences.

Bali Hop - This track is a bit better. The arrangement is more interesting although it's a bit disjointed at times.

It Not Here - You timing in the opening section is all over the place and you fluff quite a few notes. The first few bars are what make or break a piece like this and you have let yourself down here. There are way too much effects on this for my tastes and it makes the whole thing sound muddy. Try to use effects subtly to enhance rather than as a crutch.

Thanks for listening and your input. Good or bad, they are always welcomed. I'm not into MIDI these days but your points are valid and correct. I've used the songs you mentioned for corporate and event videos (where vibes and beats are usually more crucial) and but only after they've been sliced up and bit parts being used - I guess they worked then with visuals but for listening, I believe you're right in that they need to be much better, technically and perhaps from an arrangement POV.

Love Feels Good was done ages ago after less than 20+ hours 'learning' keyboards and I only knew three chords. On that account I think it was ok lah. So technically, as a keyboardist, I was very poor. But I was very happy with what I came up, compositionally.

It's Not Here - this was done in free time mode, deliberately. Feel, is more important, to me, than anything else when it comes to music. Timing and music donch go together. Music is about expression - feel. Keeping time is about precision - mechanical.

I was trying to tell a story using guitars. Timing is required only because there needs to be a mechanism to allow different band players to play in sync. But I was on my own doing a single overdub. In that case, to hell with timing! Time is only imprtant to music in two instances - when the music starts and when it ends. BUt yah, I fluffed a few notes.

Thanks again for your time.

Cheers

A recording "done ages ago" and it's now towards the end of April 2008. Wassup with dat?

BUT I WAS DRESSED APPROPRIATELY! :-D

Seriously though, they're a lot different from the stuff I've been posting recently, which are more guitar-centric. I thought it was ok to let out some keyboard stuff and drum-centric+guitar laden tracks up here. Those were 12 years ago man - vintage lah bro!
