Need help in learning guitar chords

Hi everyone. I just started playing acoustic guitar today, I don't quite understand what are the Em, C, G... etc. I'm currently at 911Tabs.com trying out some beginners' song, I understand how the guitar tabs works but the chords looks easier to play..

How did you guys learned the guitar chords??

If you started off with basic rock and roll songs, then you probably will need to learn only about 4 different chords to play more than 10 songs.. by the time you can play all these songs, those 4 chords will be stuck in your head forever. And during this time, you could be learning some new odds and ends chords. That's how I learnt.

Some cool songs that I played such as Smoke On The Water, Patience, Knocking On Heaven's Door, Child etc only requires 3 to 4 chords to play. Add more varieties over time.. its easy.. and you'd probably have enough to play most popular songs. The weird chords and funny-articulation-of-fingers chords I skip.. hehe..

I had a teacher who taught me all the basic chords and how to read chordsheets and tabs. After that i was able to play by ear IE if i know the song i can 'hear' the chord progressions as they come. You should practice hard to perfect this. It makes transposition on the fly a breeze.

Thanks all! But I have difficulty playing the chords as my fingers are rather short. They couldn't spread as wide as they're supposed to. Will I be able to overcome this problem when I'm more familiar with it?

hahas i have difficulty playing chords that requires the use of your pinkie finger wahahahahaa...
my left hand's pinkie is......some what shorter than my right hand's pinkie.(ITS NOT NORMAL!) ):
and its kind of.....err....how do i explain it :/ wrinkled?crumpled?
ahhh.
its not as straight as compared to the rest of my fingers.
but then, just keep on trying.you'll get used to all the stretching after sometime.
people with short fingers can play too!
dont give up!keep on trying!
practice practice and practice :D
you'll be able to overcome this problem when you start to get used to playing the guitar :D

Thank you, Lyte, for the encouragement! =D Sorry to hear about your pinkie finger.. That was really determined of you to carry on playing and I would certainly not give up after knowing this! Rock on!

cmon guys no matter how short ur fingers are they cant be shorter than a 6 year old's right? if a six year old can get past her short fingers and play then i'm sure we all can :) cant say i got past that hurdle cos...i think my fingers aren't really very short lol...

You made a point there, it's sure longer than a 6 year old =D I've learned how to play a full song already, I only need more practices so I strum without sticking my eyes on the frets :)

Practice hard and enjoy the moment. You'll be playing newer stuffs before u know it. U'll learn about chords progression, using your fingers to pluck the strings and some strumming pattern here and there.

Guitaring's a wonderful journey that's full of hardships, but the euphoria of overcoming those hardships is just so satisfying that the pain and effort spent in overcoming them will seem like nothing.

As for the Smoke On The Water question, if you're looking just simply for chords, sure, any guitar will be fine, even a ukelele can play it. But if you want the effects and all, only an electric guitar with the appropriate effects will give you the tone. But you most definitely can learn the song on an acoustic and then play it on an electric, there's nothing wrong.
