need help for my guitar Project

Hey guys, thanks for viewing this!!

seeking help as i have NEVER modded any of my guitars~
Ok,i am planning to do a couple of things to my MockingBird Bodyart series

+SprayPaint a new color on the Surface
+Change Pickups

so for the first spray painting part, whould i have to sand away the "plastic" top of the body itself or could i just spray paint over it?

& for the pickups, i was kinda intersted in placing EMG 81s but i realize that you would have to place batt. at the back, and i was thknining if those players who use EMGs use rechargable batteries?? (not sure if they would need to drill holes or something)

of if anyone knows an alternative to EMG (no batts required) and looks like the EMG pickups (purley for comestic, no SD styles open humbuckers please)

And in the above i was hoping if anyone knows if i can like goto a shop and ask the guys tehre like "oh hey, i wanna spray the body, and could you upgrade my pickups for me?"

I suppose you could try posting at the Maestro - Repair subforum or PM KayCee about it.

For the 9V battery you need to find a compartment to put it inside. You could drill, or like for strats, you could improvise by placing it on the tremolo cavity area, etc.
 
Hmm.

What you need to do, is to clearly identify the type of pickups you want and what colour you want the body to be (assuming you intend to go forward with an opaque finish).

As far as I'm concerned, I know that guitar workshop offers such strip-and-refinish services, but unfortunately such delicate, costly and time-consuming jobs... well.... take time, energy, skill and $$$. Such jobs are not going to be <$150-$200 anywhere on this planet. :?

In my personal experience, such finishing procedures do not involve just one day of work.. in fact it can take weeks even months for the finish coat to properly dry and harden (and also depends on the type of finish you are going after).

In fact.. if this is a project guitar, if I were you I would do some research on finishing, buy a hand-held sander, get some sand paper, some spray paint and some clear lacquer, and practise on a piece of scrap wood. The hand-held sander could probably have a velcro face, with which you can stick on some cloth and use it as a buffing face.

Yes, I would DIY. Well, in this case "do it myself". :twisted:

With the invaluable experience you get from DIY, I'm sure you can get the confidence to DIY, not just finishing, but other aspects of guitar-work. 8)

However, if you feel this way is too trouble-some. I suggest you could give us an idea of what your budget is, and whether it is more wise to DIY or let an experienced pro handle the job :wink:
 
why do u want to spray paint over a body art series mockingbird in the first place? it has body art already.

and if u do decide to see iit through yourself, dont spray over. it kills tone due to the excessively thick finish which will deaden your resonance.

and as for pickups that have covers, u could try asking around for the tony iommi humbucker. looks a lil nicer than emg's.

i guess the finish would be a Cheap looking Matte finish (let me try and find a picture) to match the Matt black EMG pickups, my mockingbird is the stringThru one so i dont have a trem area to place tee batteries.

actually i dont really have confidence to DIM (LOL) i'd rather throw it to Guitarworkshop (yay) but i dont really thnk it would take that long (i hope)

KC works at maestro. you can find him at either the esplanade or penin outlet. just diy la. cheaper summore. but really, why, of all the series, why the body art series?

as for the EMGs...dont use rechargeables.
they never give out the full 9v, only somewhere around 7.5v if not mistaken.
same with the AA batteries where most are 1.2v.

a regular 9v like a duracell should be able to last at least 6 months with regular use.

but if purely for cosmetics, and cheap...
these are humbucker covers, yea no holes and made of plastic.

Hey cool!! just the thing im loking for!! where do i find em?? would they come out easily ?

EDIT : Does it serve some purpose ?

if the batt dies there would be no sound is it ? haha, damn i really so sua gu, i tried to place a 9v batt at the back og my guitar and it fits in the Control area, but would they need to drill new holes or anyhtng to install the EMGs??
 
im sure you can glue them somehow to the base of the pickup, couple drops on each end will do.
find them locally? no idea.
else get someone to make them for you.
seeing as its plastic, i would assume it would deaden the sound somewhat.

and since your batt can fit, no other holes needed for EMGs.
 
Hmm.

Well if you're going after a matte black finish... Artfriend sells a can of matte-black spray paint (I know because I bought one myself, not for guitars though).

Doing the job yourself could also psychologically allow you to have alot of pride in your instrument. Personally I have set-up, re-strung and cleaned all of my axes myself.. It may not be the most professional of jobs, but it works for me.

I have never really asked a professional to do it for me because I want to be able to be self-reliant. By reading books and trying out cautiously in practise, I've been doing it for the past 5 years.

Also I'm one poor kid. :lol:

When it comes to finishing a guitar... you can either completely strip off the old finish by sanding, or just sand down enough to get rid of the graphics (which I do believe is a thin decal, pasted over the primer coat and then sprayed over with a hardener coat). It might be tricky doing the job, but as I have mentioned earlier.. practising on a plank of spare wood works wonders. :wink:

Also test your finishing skills (on another piece of spare wood), and see if you can get the results you want. Remember that in finishing jobs, patience is the key and you can't just spray and wait for 15min before trying with your finger to see if it's dry :lol: . Give it at least 12 hours for it to settle and harden properly (also keep it in a dust-free environment).

But I'm personally going to strip my old beat up acoustic as well some time next month. Give it a new thin coat of lacquer or probably make it matte black! :P
 
yea plastic wont affect the magnetism of the pickups.
but it'll affect the amount of string vibration reaching the pickup.
and seeing as theres no pole pieces sticking thru...

actually im not gonna spray it matte black but rather a soft kinda Pink-purple matte, its hard to describe, will let you guys see it once i get it done

So did you use the Spray on ur guitar? hope it doesnt corrode the material overtime or soemthing like that
 
okies thanks lots Crawly and whoever else chipped in, i Guess i'll go down top Brash basah 1 day and pick a can of Spray then hope down to GuitarWorkshop... hope they sell Pickups there then Everything KT there.
