What is a pedal used for?
sometimes, i watched vids where people just tapped their fingers on the fretboard on a string producing a sound equivalent to picking the same string..
why is that so?
what's a tremolo/vibrato arm used for?
pardon me of my n00bishness...

Thats just a technique called tapping. You can do so but pressing hard on the notes with ur right hand or hammering it on the string, you will produce a sound. Tapping usually involves the hammering and pull offs. So you can tap with your right hand and pull off to another note up the fretboard. You can search videos on youtube how they do it.

There are different effect pedals such as Distortion , Whammy, Delay, Reverb, Wah Wah, and many more. These are the stuff in order to sound like those bands with hard distortion and so on. You use a pedal to achieve the different sound a basic amp( those noob ones) is unable to produce. Normally amps only come with a simple overdrive.

A tremolo or vibrato arm is used for increasing or decreasing the sound when a note is played. There is the normal strat like tremolo and the floyd rose bridges which allows the user the make the sound go higher by pulling up the vibrato arm. Some sounds such as those dive bomb sounds can be produced through the vibrato arm. There are many uses for this. You can search on youtube for some videos. Such as Herman Li's video game sounds and such. Many notable guitarist uses these technique, such as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.
