oops i rmmbrd incorrectly. thanks for clarifying cheez..i think i mixed up the office licensing with the OS. Sorry kai
anyway cheez is right, especially for a daw, u would want to stay away from Vista for a while. In terms of audio production, there is not much/any significant benefit(s) so that adds a demerit to Vista now. XP will not phase out so fast, its just the hype of Vista that is getting to retailers..Go to 4th, 5th & 6th floors of SLS. Try (by priority) Fuwell, Bell Systems, Bizgram, Active Foto or Cybermind. If they're not carrying the OSs, they can tell you where to get.
Get an OEM Home version for $123-$130, or professional for $198-$209. Both were available in Active Foto some days ago. I myself have been using OEM since i dont mind the trade-offs as they are insignificant to me. I hardware-play alot so my data most of the time are in external drives or media. As for a DAW, i cant see what harm an OEM version of an OS could do. Read:

Normal, retail version of Media Center Edition is available for $159, although the last piece may have been sold already. Dont use this for DAW.
Backup? I have had bad experiences with optical discs; CDs, DVDs, RWs, Rs. But if u do have to backup, Mitsubishi or Verbatim are the brands for u (Verbatim is a Mitsubishi subsidiary anyway). There are also some brands that are made specially for backup, but cost atleast 1 dollar more per disc. Data servers and busines entities would normally rely on their scsi drives, which cost a comet for us normal peeps. Drives nowadays barely fail, altho i myself cant be 100% sure of that. So like mentioned, for VERY important data, always have multiple sources of backup.
