Natural/real orchestra string sound

Yes, but the Fairlight etc just doesn't make it as realistic although they do produce nice sounds. As for the Emulators which used to be really hot, there's not so much difference between them and the Akai S series since sample developers come up with the same sample set in different formats anyway. They are both limited by amount of RAM.

Anyway, Hans Zimmer also has an entire rack of PCs hosting stacks of samples. I'm a minimalist and I always want to disprove the necessity of large racks of PC etc to give realistic sound. I managed to shrink everything down to one desktop replacement notebook with 100GB of samples on 1 external harddisk - gives my an entire orchestra nevertheless. The same goes for ultra-large libraries like EWQLSO platinum and VSL Pro edition. Many of us still believe that we can achieve similar realism with smaller sample sets and at a lower budget. But having said that, my current libraries built up over a number of years doesn't come cheap either.

Actually, some old sample libraries are still quite usable but just need lots of tweaking. I've heard people use the old Roland S760 libraries (after tweaking) to create really good realistic sounds. I guess in the end, technique is just as important as the raw technology.
