Hi guys

I just started my own Youtube channel in an attempt to get abit of experience recording as an acoustic guitar singer. For the time being I'll be doing covers. I try to stay as original to my covers as possible without having to go off-key. And also I'm not the kind of person who thinks his voice is great.

Do please drop a comment and rate my videos. Constructive criticism is much appreciated! :D

Cheers!

Here are a list of songs that I've covered so far:

12:51 - The Strokes (with band)
Fade to Black - Metallica (with band, not vocalist)
The Young Ones - Cliff Richard
Creep - Radiohead
This Modern Love - Bloc Party
Despair in the Departure Lounge - Arctic Monkeys
The Scientist - Coldplay
Mardy Bum - Arctic Monkeys
Riot Van - Arctic Monkeys
Ooh La - The Kooks
She Moves In Her Own Way - The Kooks
I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance - Black Kids
My Mistakes Were Made For You - The Last Shadow Puppets

Take this with a pinch of salt. I'm not gonna be like most of them here.

1) Can't hear your guitar. Is it a tong? Get a better one. Asap. Something that costs at least 80 dollars. Or just a better one.

2) You have potential but you need work. When you record, did you listen to yourself first? Did you do another recording and improved on a particular part?

I only listened to your covers of the kooks cos i absolutely love them, but i don't really like em. Issues:

a) Rhythm. There were times when your rhythm would just go on and on. kinda like rambling. which comes to...

b) Soul. Put some love and soul into the song, mate. It feels empty. If you see how Luke Pritchard sings, he's really into the song and he doesn't use his voice, but rather his heart.

c) Music. Couldn't hear any music. back to point #1

hope that helps a bit. come back in a month. :P

I honestly thought nobody would reply to my thread, and I'm quite happy I got some constructive criticism as the first reply. I've got a couple of questions, though:

1) My guitar is an acoustic-nylon that's like god-knows how old. Do you know any place that sells cheap but good acoustic guitars?

2) Yea I do listen to myelf everytime before I post on Youtube. I kinda did this whole channel thing to prove to everyone I know that a Singaporean can make it big on the global stage without the help of Singapore Idol, etc, and also to make a fresh start on my dream. Trouble is, I've got a pretty low self-esteem when it comes to my voice. Would you mind recommending on any methods to help improve my vocal range?

As for the rhythm and soul part, I guess I just have to put more effort into these songs. I mean, the songs I choose to cover are songs that I feel deeply about, and I may consider taking down some of my covers and putting up better versions of them, especially Creep and The Scientist cause they're a couple of my favourite songs. Would that be a wise thing to do?

I'd appreciate it if I could get a reply asap so that I can start working and improving on my flaws. Hope more people like you could comment on my page and/or covers. I'm not being sarcastic in any way

Cheers mate!

Hey mate

Glad to see you're humbling down unlike some other people.

1) Bras Basah Swee Lee. Good guitars and they help out newbies. Get a decent one. Get a friend who knows guitars. :)

2) Hmm... That low self-esteem part is a bit risqué. For example, if you would ever to meet me to have an informal say.. voice clinic or something, I would really ask you to do certain things that may sound silly, even stupid, but it's all to know if you have the basics.

But to be rather honest, those who made it big sometimes can't really sing well, so they use Speech Level Singing. This is basically singing with your talking voice. An example would be Oasis - Wonderwall (that's just an opinion). Anyway, those who made it big isn't really about the singing - it's about their own songs. So if you could write some, that's good.

1But please, don't force yourself. Songs that were forcedly written, can be felt through melody and lyrics.

Do a cover of the Scientist and post it here. I'll give you my feedback.

Check out my covers. Not trying to boast but try and see how it is. I'm rather amateurish though I have a couple of originals. Been hoping to settle down to do an EP but never got down to that.

If you have facebook, you can add me. Just pm me if you're ok with that.

And don't stalk me, cos I'll block you.

Cheers.

Your music system and the mine is poles apart. I'm a Melayu like you but I'm into the Arabic vocal artform , maqamat or improvisations to the closest of translations.

maybe you'd like to do a liasing and exchange pointers.
