Finally I managed to organize my second speech level singing lesson with Daniel! It's been 6 months now since the first. As with the first lesson, the results far exceeded my expectations.
The first things he pointed out were:
- When I reach for high notes, I push my the back of my tongue down to try to connect my vocal cords. But actually this prevents me singing naturally. So he got me to push up with my fingers against the bottom of my tongue (under my chin), so I knew when I was doing it, and also to prevent me "using" it to sing high.
- I try to sing up for high notes and down for low notes. What he taught me was to leave my voice in the same place for my entire range, that place being in my mouth. And the effect was amazing - vibrato popped up naturally in my chest voice again (it had been rare for some time), and I was able to connect my vocal cords on higher notes without straining and without that "bad opera" sound. I also found my low notes coming easily, and without the irritating "duh" sound I had had in my voice recently.
For the rest of the session he trained me in keeping my cords connected as I moved between chest and head registers. The key exercise was a soft but intensely buzzy "mmm" sound, with a lot of variations.
I am going to have more frequent lessons from now on. 6 months is just too much time to waste, time that I could have spent improving my voice.
Unfortunately the cd with the lesson recording is BROKEN! It seems the Imation cds are not so good quality as Verbatim. I am in the process of attempting to recover the recording.
