my little excursion to HK...(GAS warning)

Hey all,

saw lotsa goodies there, and thought i'd post up some stuff for all, if anybody's intending to head down there anytime soon.

images are on image shack so i dunno how long they will last, but hope you guys can see the images.

First up, all excited on day one, headed straight to Cameron lane in Kowloon to check out HK's biggest guitar store. (Tom Lee Music) apparently the one in cameron is the biggest one. i stayed in a hotel about 5 mins walk away so yah, i was there almost everyday of the 4 days i spent there. heh. i mean, its really nothing compared to GC or the big chain stores in the US, but its plenty good nonetheless...

lotsa of fenders, ibanez, PRS, yamaha, Gibsons, ESP, epiphones, LTD, etc. stuff you get to see in sg i guess. i took some pics just for variety's sake...

But i wasn't there guitar shopping. i was there hoping to get my hands on a mesa dual r'fier thinggie. so, was a little disappointed that the dual was sold by the time i got there. they only had the mark IV, Nomad 55 series, Lonestars, Dual R'fier Road King combo and the single r'fier solo head 50w. also tons of marshalls! (TSL 60W for SGD$1200, Mode Four 350 for SGD$1200...etc), Laneys and Fenders, Epiphone , Ibanez and Line 6 amps, one or two ashdowns and hartkes etc..had mesa cabs and even a beautiful Genz Benz 4 x 12 cab. anyways, here's some more pics..!

tried the Nomad series but didn't quite take to it in the end. the rest were just out of my budget, except the single r'fier solo head, but still wasn't that convinced based on reviews. what's good is they let you play to your heart's content, no questions asked.

since Mesa was out, i figured i'd try and see if HK had any Carvin dealers. called them up and found another little shop (Tsang Fook & Co. located along Jordan Rd, Eaton Hotel), small outfit, sold lotsa recording stuff and lotsa carvin guitars, but the V3 was sold out!! argh. anyways, spotted some classics there...more pics!!

these guys will ship to sg if anyone's keen. just pm me and i can pass u their contact. the service at tsang fook was much better than tom lee's but product range much smaller. and the way TL handled their amps had me thinking twice about buying from them...

anyways, hope some folks enjoyed this little writeup. thanks for reading and hope it helps anyone who might wanna head down to HK soemtime soon for some guitar shopping.

cheers

yep i did. bought the Peavey JSX head in the end. they offered me the thing at almost the same price as the carvin v3, including DHL. i grabbed it. :D

i think ima get my aunt to ship me one. they DO have basses right?

Yo man nice pictures and thanks for sharing them! :)

Gas for mesa....nanoshred's fault! ;)

How much did the nomads and lower wattage tube combos go for?

Thanks.

Christopher.

chester - yep they do, but sorry didn't find out prices from them. TL (Tom Lee) had tons of basses, lotsa beautfiul looking exotic wood combis. TF (Tsang Fook) had some carvin basses. didn't notice much else cos i was so taken by the mark III in the cane cover thinggie...yums.

superkicky - yep they are at http://www.tsangfook.com.hk for the tom lee fans they are at http://www.tomleemusic.com

christopher - Nomad 55 series going on sale now. (clearance actually, rather old models).
Nomad 55 4 x 10 combo going for SGD$3062.50.
Nomad 55 2 x 12 combo going for SGD$2085.60
Nomad 55 1 x 12 combo going for SGD$2122.90
(Yes the 1 x 12 is more expensive than the 2 x 12 - dunno why..??)
Mark IV combo - SGD$4000
Solo R'fier Head 50w - $2666
Dual R'fier Road King Combo - SGD$6250
Blue Angel Dual R'fier - SGD$2479

Okie think those are about the prices i can remember. hope this helps. but TL does not ship to singapore. PLUS, the guy told me all the fuses for the amps had blown and the orders would only come in end of month. so if ya buy their amps now, you gotta wait for the fuse to come in. I made them take out the fuse from their road king combo to use on the nomad and mark iv to try. heh.

they had an epiphone valve combo (small little fella) going for sgd$200 i think.

cheers

Thanks for the update on those prices man. Appreciate it!

I got gas for a new amp really bad. Gotta get my ass down to HK soon! Those pics are enough to tempt me.

My guitarist is contemplating the epiphone valve junior as well.

Christopher.

hmmm .. how are the prices of the guitars therE??

comvert to sgd + shipping .. will it be worth it to get them to ship stuff over?

big fan of Tom Lee as well. I really liked them. They let me play the EBMM JP for a while, then I came back the next day, and they got it out for me again... almost bought it, but already bid (and eventually won) an Axis Super Sport on eBay. Oh well... next time maybe...

Wah Warrior guitar. Very bootek. Along the lines of Driskill.

Seems like I have to pay a them a visit after I ORD. :smt003

hey all, say who put the "GAS warning" thinggie in the subject head? hehe.

anyways, sorry dudes, i am not so sure about the gibby prices, but i do remember seeing some going for about $3500 (is that normal price?). i believe the snake/dragon guitar is a PRS actually (or i thot i saw the headstock say PRS...But...shape dun look like it lei..). dunno what model though. they (tsang fook) also had a 1961 gibson sg hanging there, as in, not a reissue. forgot to take that pic. shucks. the matchless is very expensive according to the sales dude (its second hand, i believe the model is a TV-1?), and the mesa mark iii is almost $4kSGD, and its second hand!

just to clarify with one and all, Tom Lee is the one doing the mesa amps, not tsang fook. Tsang Fook does Carvin and some other brands (G&L too me thinks)

anyways, for guitar prices you can check out http://www.tomleemusic.com/SpecialPage/super_buy/guitar_tc.asp
their "bargain buys" page. worth checking out. for that matter, the amps section would give you a more accurate pricing, i might have gotten some stuff wrong... :)

cheers

i believe worth it only if SG does not have the guitar / never will bring in etc.
