Musicians and Tattoos

Hmm, just a thought. I've noticed that there is an increasing trend with musicians either having inks or getting ink. Any musicians here with tatts? It'd be interesting to know if music and the latter co-relates with one another :)

My personal view would be its just another way of expressing ourselves. Cos ultimately we're still artistic ppl. And artistic ppl have different ways of expressing themselves.

Some like piercing, tattooing. So inking is just a form of expressing how we feel. Plus normally a tattoo has a deep meaning to it. So inking it on ur body denotes something that has happened.

Just like u write a certain song to rem something or an incident. Or u have a fav song u like caused it brings back memories.

For some, it would be , their idols have tats, so they follow in suit.

Cheers! Peace :)

heh, long long time ago, some tribes, culture already has tattoo lah. It not just modern days people known as instrument playing fellas(what you called musicians) having them or to do with it.

I mean, if hanging out vital organs is a symbolism of brutality and awesomness in some cultures, who knows, prolly those easily impressible dumb musicians might walk around with their private members showing, instead of tattoos

My ink are my family symbols, I wear them with pride.
"UA MALIE TOA! UA MALIE TAU! OU TE LE TOE SAU I LE AULIULI TAU. AE O LE A OU SAU I LE AULIULI FOLAU"

it doesnt directly co-relates with musicians. Perhaps, it is more likely that the relationship is mediated by the personality dimensions (i.e openness to experience)
that is to say, people certain personality characteristics tend to play some kind of music and have tattoos.

I don't think there's any direct relation either... There are musicians with tattoos and musicians without. Similarly, there are non-musicians with tattoos. Most musicians with tattoos seem to be from the rock/metal genres. So perhaps there's a link there. Though there are also plenty of rock/metal musicians without tattoos.

But a link between music and tattoos? I doubt it... it's really a personal choice.

Many people related to gangs have tattoo on them but they don't play music..

And.. I think all musicians who play for church or something do not have ant tattoos on them i guess..

my friend who plays for church has loads of tattoos..

i dont think tattoos necessarily have anything to do with musicians. there have always been many guys with tattoos. i didn't really notice it as a 'trend'. maybe now even 'trendy' guys are getting tattoos. whatever.

there are tattoo guys who have other hobbies as well

for most *SERIOUS* tattoo enthusiasts, a tattoo isn't about looking cool. that is only how some young punk would do it. for the rest, the tattoo itself usually has a great significance to the person.

^Agreed.
But some of my friends have tattoos. He made one for his girlfriend (now ex-girlfriend) so it's a matter of how great significance is defined. Some make ying/yang tattoos or of the gods they believe in. I have seen Hindu Scriptures as tattoos, too.
Interlinked? No. It is mostly a personal choice.
Well, for church, some who have tattoos are those who may have been led astray by friends, or had a previous personal conviction to another god and thus, had that tattoo made. So if there was a transformation in his life and he goes to church, who are we to say anything if we don't know the guy? My take? Don't comment if you don't know, and talk to the person direct if you do.

so church goers cant have tattoos?

Church goers can't have tattoos? That's utter rubbish. So not true.

Having tattoos is seen as 'damaging' your own body because there's risks of damage to your skin cells. Thus, it is disapproved of in Christianity and it is not recommended. But discriminating against someone because he/she has tattoos, that is also wrong.

And thus, there is no such thing as church goers can't have tattoos.

I didn't say that, please don't misquote me. What i meant was, if you go to church BEFORE you have tattoos, then you should not have them, because the Bible tells us that the body is a Temple Of God, and we should respect it, so we shouldn't mutilate it. As is the same with smoking, piercings, etc. This is directly disobeying God's commandments to us, it is akin to breaking the law on a much larger scale, from a Christian POV. That is my take. For example, you wouldn't trash your precious five-figure guitar just to try out, or cause your friends are trashing theirs.
If one has tattoos and after that he goes to church, there is no hard and fast rule that says he cannot be allowed in, or that we should be judgmental and condemn him. Quite the opposite, actually. We should love others as ourselves.

I am not here to preach, i am here to express my views from a Christian's point on why one should not have tattoos or do other things that is detrimental to both our body and relationship with God. I don't know about other religions, but in Christianity, we are taught we should not mutilate our bodies, be it through piercings, tattoos etc.

i'd probably get a tattoo if it wasn't against my religious beliefs. Nice garang looking tattoos. I hate stuff like tribal(fake ones with just lots of pointy edges) or barb wire tattoos, to me they're really ugly.

Jumpin'Jellybean: I wasn't directing at you, just in case my post implied that. Rather, the statement that church goers can't have tattoos, I saw that statement as a potential start for religion bashers to start a conflict. So my post was more to clarify that although Christians are advised against tattoos (or rather, commanded not to, in the Bible), we do not discriminate against people with tattoos. I wanted to make sure no one got the wrong idea. :)

Personally, being a Christian, I don't have tattoos and don't plan on getting any. But even if I wasn't a Christian, I'd rather spend the money (tattoos are expensive!) on some nice guitar or cycling equipment which I feel would benefit me better. Or perhaps a nice Macbook or Alienware PC.

Also, I've heard that in the army, life can get pretty tough for recruits with tattoos, basically the sirs will pick on those with tattoos more. And yet another thing is that it is more difficult to find a job if you have tattoos. I don't agree with that but that's the way it is. Often, employers will look at the first impression and tattoos generally give them a bad first impression... it's not fair but what to do...

Not saying tattoos are wrong, but I'm just adding some thoughts about why I think tattoos might not be a good idea... from a religious perspective as well as from a non-religious one.

just for the record, this is not true. know plenty of recruits with tattoos and none of them get discriminated whatsoever. it's all down to attitude of the recruit.

EugeneSmasher: Sure bro, i understand. I was responding to bro LadyInTears comment about why church goers cannot have tattoos. Yeah, commanded not to. However, there are cases in which a churchgoer is NOT a Christian, for example, his friend brings him. And i've personally witnessed discrimination and judgmental attitude to this particular person.
So i'm trying to portray that once one becomes a Christian, he should not have tattoos, regardless of his past. (Even if he had tattoos in the past.) However when push comes to crunch, it is all down to one's personal choice. Hoped i've cleared the air, bro LadyInTears.
Furthermore, if one has tattoos, we should not be judgmental or discriminative. Everyone should be treated the same.

Once again, i reemphasize my point that i am in no way trying to promote my religion. I am merely explaining the reasoning on why a Christian should not have tattoos. This is my personal POV and may not concur with the Church's, so if there's any contradiction, feel free to ask someone more senior than i.

Joel Houston from Hillsong has a very visible on his right arm. He leads the church worship team and his dad's the senior pastor. But he has still received a lot of respect from plenty of people. Not because of his appearance but his devotion to praise and serve God.
