Musically inclined

I think there is some confusion between "musically gifted/talented" and "musically inclined" in this thread.

To be 'inclined' is defined as "having a preference, disposition, or tendency".

pedialite's understanding seems to be closest to the truth.

Woohoo I feel so smart! :D

And ya.. 'feel' also very important. But some musicians, espcially Guitarists, Drummers and Pianists make really funny faces.
Steve Vai, Tre Cool... and almost every pianist/keyboardist does that slow-mo circle headbanging (while sitting down). HAHA! Except melodic death and powermetal keyboardists, they go INSANE!

heh sorry then i would mean musically gifted. i always thought they meant the same. darn

i think being musically gifted also have to do with being gifted in other subjects like math, or art, being creative. ur brain catches something and stimulates itself to form something similar yet of a different version or by a different way.

like someone said playing master of puppets on a piano. that guy may also be gifted in other subjects. like maths, someone clever would know how to solve a problem. but to me, someone gifted would find and analyse all the ways to find the answer.

being gifted/talented is a gift (my opinion). having a strong foundation, having great creativity and so for.

It's just like sports. Certain people have the physical aspects that allows them to strive in sports. Music is basically the same thing. It's built upon the foundations of the whole left-brained, right brained thing. It's more of your ability to process music. In most cases, being musically gifted does not just happen; the causes can be influence by music when still a fetus to a musical family upbringing.

I've also yet to come across a good standard muso who's low in intelligence

not sure if u consider him low in intelligence but pls take a look at this

The Musical Genius - Derek Paravicini
Derek, now in his mid twenties, was born premature, at 25 weeks, and weighing just over half a kilogram. As a result of the oxygen therapy required to save his life, Derek lost his sight, and his development was affected too. It later became apparent that he had severe learning difficulties. However, he soon acquired a fascination for music and sound, and, by the age of four, had taught himself to play a large number of pieces on the piano, of some melodic and harmonic complexity (such as 'Smoke Gets in your Eyes'). Almost inevitably, with no visual models to guide him, his technique was chaotic, and even his elbows would frequently be pressed into service, as he strove to reach intervals beyond the span of his tiny hands!

In reply to thomastik, most probably he suffered severe damage to his left brain which is responsible for logical thinking, which handles areas such as Mathematics, Sciences et cetera. Music, however, being an art, is managed almost wholly by the right brain, which is in charge of creativity and related. Just wondering, did Derek Paravicini compose any of his own pieces?

u might wanna watch the 5 part documentary to find out :D

Great.

Anyhow, you feel free to watch it. Just to state, Mathematics is said to have a connection to music, especially composition. Hence, if Derek Paravicini is a lengendary composer too, then perhaps his musical ability hasn't got so much to do with left brain impairment and in turn, perhaps just sensitivity to music.

unfortunately i dun think he's much of a composer, but more like an improvisor :)

u know from that video alone i dont see derek as autistic, other than the fact that he cant count properly. but its only a small video.. hes really impressive. especially playing that piece at the end with accuracy after hearing it only once in his life. haha that isnt musical giftedness, thats freaking genius:D

imo, musically inclined doesn't really equate to feel. as musically inclined is a sort of natural talent and feel is somewhat acquired. i believe my understanding of the phrase " musically inclined " is like the most of the people also, so pardon for not having the exact dictionary meaning. but as i state in the previous posts, i think its the ability to pick up music stuffs fast and improvisation. picking up fast being a natural learner for the music and improvisation. improvisation as in not just having in mind what to play. but also being able to express it out clearly in what you had wanted. :D
