Music theory

I suggest you save your time and money by not going to the ABRSM voice exam.

Pop vocals and classical technique/articulation is completely different.

My friends were very good ktv singers. But they still need intensive training to pass their ABRSM grade 1. They had 1 hr of individual lesson per week, choir practice twice a week, perform in the choir every week for a year before they attempt the exam. Yet, not everybody gets a merit or distinction.

i hardly know anything about singing, but i did learn classical piano when younger, and at that time i went through theory grade by grade, 1 grade every year.

it seems that it is possible to study for and pass the grade 5 theory exam in about 2 years. i think for practical it would take at least 2 years to pass, say, grade 3?

i don't think there is any quick fix i.e. attaining grade 5 in theory/practical in a year. even if the examinations are cleared (unlikely), a strong grasp of the subject will probably be absent.

Don't waste your time if you're doing pop vocals. The only reason why I do classical theory is for my piano and my future plans to learn how to play the lute.

Hi there!

You'll learn a lot about music by studying for the grade 5 theory exam, even if you don't actually take the exam. I know a lot of people think that the theory side of things is a bit dull or not really connected with real music making, but I've never met any musician who regretted learning something about theory. The good thing about the ABRSM exams is that they are structured in a logical and accessible way - and if you do get to the stage where you are ready to sit grade 5, you'll feel a great sense of achievement.

As for how long it takes, it really depends on what you know already and whether you are a fast learner. As someone mentioned, having a good brain for things like fractions can be a help, but above all, having an interest in learning is the most important thing. If you want to learn something, you are much more likely to succeed than if your heart is not really in it!

I say, go for it!

Learning theory for the sake of learning is definitely a yes. That's why it's better to learn without taking exams. But cramping everything into a few months, doing it for for the sake of getting a cert, amounts to almost nothing. It's easy to pass, with some good memory and counting. But that's not the point. There's more to theory than just passing exams.

whew~

sorry, I thought you're so gung-ho to attempt the classical exam with pop vocals training.

Its good to learn music theory. Very helpful to learn songs fast to sing in choir especially if you're not singing the soprano part. But don't just learn for the sake of passing exam. Already too much learning/had learnt so many subjects in school for the sake of passing exam. I try not to let exam spoil my learning experience...
