Music theory

i'm just curious, how many softies out there have taken music theory grade exams. if so what grade are you at?

Technically I went up to Grade 2(like six+ years back), but I know roughly up to grade 5 stuff.

The reason (for stopping) being is that there's quite a bit of redundancy in music theory, depending in your instrument. So actually getting it is mainly only for the certificate; which I feel isn't honestly the point of learning so much.

actually i find it quite useful. like i think it will help in composition, cuz u learn the intervales and other stuff too. and i think musicianship is impt too, i feel if u got it then u really know what ur doing/ writing in our music. well thats imp. :D

yeah..it aids me alot in my songwriting..when u get higher, you learn more complex stuff which can really help u damn alot if you know how to use them efficiently..

theory is not meant to be just a certificate only.. thats the mentality of many pianist i know in singapore. Theory will help you alot in composition and understanding music. If u apply your theory to your practical too, it helps alot :)..

my 0.5cent..

yeah..i learnt alot of theory but i didnt know how to apply it to composition..only when teraslasch taught me how to use them efficiently..haha now im abusing all the theory i know in my compositions!!

well..grade 7 has damn alot of stuff to memorise..u go buy a grade 7 theory book and see for urself and u'll know..its either i do theory and pause practical or i do practical and pause theory during grade 7  cant concentrate on both at the same time..

so frustrated, i can only do theory, cannot do practical

guitar only got practical for classical, :(, anw i got no grade yet, but i'm currently studying grade 6 theory

Hey!
I m very interested in taking music theory exams
but do I have to noe how 2 play piano or guitar?
I m always facinated about bean sprouts and how they actually work.
music theory = no practical? plz enlighten mi.
Thanks.where 2 learn?

theory is theory, practical is practical..you dun have to necessary know how to play the piano or guitar to take theory cuz they wont access u on that during theory exams!!juz learn how to write and thats it..

hmm if im not wrong around grade 4 have composition stuff le rite?juz tt as the grade gets higher, learn how to compose more complex stuff la..like intervals and some other stuff..

I took a course from ICOM (international College of Music) Pre-foundation course. Equivalent to ABRSM Grade 5. :)

pre-foundation course equivalent to ABRSM grade 5?!lol that high? i noticed LCM(london college of music) teaches stuff one grade higher than ABRSM..which means i learn LCM grade 4 equals to ABRSM grade 5

i see. i'm thinking about going into composition as in like get a diploma in it or smth if theres one avaliable.
