Anyone has any experience/knowledge to share on this topic?

What are the approaches/rules went it comes to harmonizing with a lead melody?

Any good guitar licks/solos to recommend?
I know Iron Maiden has many great licks playing in harmony (3 guitars). :D

You might try Dragon kiss ... marty friedman.

Harmony is basically playing notes that are diatonic (in scale) to the key.
Depends on how you want it to sound. Try experiment with notes that are a third apart or forth apart or sixth apart.

Practice your scales like this:

1,3,2,4,3,5,4,6,5,7 ... (Third apart)

or 1,4,2,5,3,6,4,7,5,8,6,9 ..... (forths apart)

1,5,2,6,3,7,4,8,5,9, .....

1,6,2,7,3,8,4,9 .... (sixths apart)

3,1,4,2,5,3,6,4,7,5,8,6,9,7 (third inverted)

4,1,5,2,6,3,7,4,8,5, .... (Forths inverted)

This way ... you will be able to recognise how a harmonised note will sound like. It can be a combination of a few ... and you can try more complex patterns like 4,1,2,3,5,2,3,4,6,3,4,55,7,4,5,6,8,5,6,7,9,6,7,8 ... just invent it yourself! And practice the full scale like this for the whole fretboard!!
