I just saved my computer from a frigging spyware hijack. My idiot brother accepted some stupid file his friend sent to him.

I'm furious and I wish to lock my MSN Messenger so that only I am able to sign in. How do I do this? Anybody knows?

Well you could install some spyware and/or virus scanners and removers. Google them. I comp rarely gets any viruses or spywares.

haha, the spyware thingy again..
kana twice eredy, then had to reformat the com.

i dun think its possible to set only a user to sign in.
best u can do is not allow anyone else to use msn lar.
for anti-spyware programs, it didn't work for me.
maybe the latest updates does...
juzz remind u'r bro and anyone else using msn not to accept files in msn that sounds weird or are very small in size. 1kb.

Aira,

Is the intention to ensure that your brother does not use the PC at all?

Why not just set a BIOS password which will ensure that the computer cannot be logged on at all unless the password is inserted.

Some of the steps are documented as follows:

http://www.lockdown.co.uk/?pg=biospsw&s=articles

Based on my limited understanding, its ultimately full access or no access, given that as long as your brother can log on pass the BIOS level, there are always ways to bypass other security measures.

Here's what you should do:

Ensure you have all patches and OS updates, e.g. Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Get Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta or Adaware or something like that. Install for all users.

Make sure your anti-virus software definitions file is up to date

Create a seperate Windows XP logon user account for you and one for your brother - ensure that he is not part of the 'administrators' group.

Now, you can safely let him use the machine while you are away. He can associate his own .NET Passport account for Messenger with the logon account, so when he signs in, it will use his credentials, not yours.

If his brother is smart enough he can open the pc and clear the cmos settings you know. I think a better way is to set a password at OS level, he needs to be VERY daring to format the pc and clear the password.
