IF YOU want to catch some of the brightest sparks of the Asean indie music scene, you’ll want to head on down to the F1 Pit Building on Saturday morning.
Yes, you read right. MORNING. 7AM to be precise. Some 3,000 folks will be able to catch performances by Thaitanium (from Thailand), Agrikulture (Indonesia), Estranged (Malaysia), Chicosci and Taken By Cars (Philippines), as well as Singapore bands Composition B and The Fire Fight when they perform at the Nike+ Human Race 10K.
Who wouldn’t want to catch Sarah Marco (centre) of Taken By Cars – even if it’s at 7am?
But you know how they say the early bird catches the worm? Well, it’s true. Organisers said it’s first-come, first-served. Sorry.
What’s more interesting though is how the bands are going to make the early morning call. Rockers aren’t known for their rise-and-shine attitude are they?
But Estranged, who played a blistering set in Kuala Lumpur in August for the MTV Worldstage event, isn’t going to let something like that get in the way of putting on a good show, even if they’re playing at 7am (no, really, that’s their slot.)
“Well, we’re there to pump up the spirit of the runners,” they said. “Music is always around us, and for such a big event like the Human Race, music shouldn’t be put aside. So we’re here to bring inspiration to the people and everyone involved in the event.”
Estranged: Ready for morning music mayhem
The Singapore contingent’s representatives are newbie band Composition B, who’ll be playing their first gig, and The Fire Fight (below), who recently released the rather excellent album, Henri.
Said members of Composition B: ”Singapore is the only South East Asian city, out of more than 30 cities worldwide, to host the race. To be able to play on stage and reach out to the youth via our music is something that we are happy to be part of, and we are excited about it!”
Of course, if you really can’t make it in the morning, head on down to *scape Youth Centre: Lab at Orchard Boulevard in the evening.

7.30PM to be precise. That’s when some of the bands who played the morning gig will be on hand to kick out the jams at the event.
Cheekily titled A Side Show, this evening gig will feature Chicosci, Taken By Cars, Plainsunset and The Fire Fight. But good folk at Wake Me Up Music (WMUM), who are organising this event said they only have limited tickets left, so you’d better hurry.
