Hmm.
Chester, on behalf of everyone who has 'been there, done that'.. one thing you gotta realise is that... we all go through certain phases in our lives.
In your instance, I'm guessing you're still trying to find your character on the bass guitar and that's not a bad thing. In fact, it's a commendable thing because alot of people are stuck in their own little world thinking that they are the best.
We never stop learning.
Now, about that 'loser' blowhard...
All of us meet such people where-ever we turn, whether it's on the job, at school, on the bus/mrt etc etc. The point I'm trying to drive at is that one fine day you're going to look upon these people with a sense of pity, not your current 'what am I going to do to make him change his point of view?'.
Who cares what he thinks? He's just one guy.
All you need to know is:
1. what you can do
2. what you want to do
3. how to do it
4. and just hear the good stuff (throw in Gold 90.5 FM joke here)
I myself have met plenty of SOBs and I can tell you one thing: once you hone your chops.. nothing an stop you.
Hopes this helps
