Sigh. I woke up at 10am and all the tickets from balcony A is gone. No choice but to take balcony B. Tickets seems to be selling pretty well.

One more week to the Scottish invasion.

have you bought your tickets yet?

Here's a little article on those Glaswegians in The Business Times.

Performing Better With lyric-less Songs

TO those who are not hardcore music aficionados, Scottish band Mogwai's brand of music may seem slightly strange.

After all, the instrumental rock group best known for composing lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces has made its name out of producing and performing songs that are lyricless - an anomaly in the music scene.

'When the band first started, many of our songs had lyrics but they weren't very good,' revealed Mogwai's guitarist Stuart Braithwaite, who was one of the band's founding members in 1995. 'It wasn't as though we deliberately set out to be different, it just turned out that our songs with no lyrics were better.'

Imbued perhaps with a touch of 'devil may care' attitude as they take a page out of the band's name itself - Mogwai (meaning 'devil' in Cantonese) is named after the creatures from the film Gremlins - the band then was unfazed by how unconventional their type of music was.

'We were just a bunch of guys who wanted to make music, it was as simple as that, we didn't really care what people thought,' says Braithwaite with a bit of a laugh.

But courageous or otherwise, 13 years down the road the uniqueness has paid off. The group that has grown from three to five members today is one of the most influential and best known names in today's post-rock industry.

On an Asian tour to support their latest album, The Hawk is Howling, the band will play a 90-minute set at the Esplanade on Jan 23 and fans can expect a good mix of new songs and old classics. This follows their previous sell-out concert here in 2006.

'We love playing in Singapore,' says Braithwaite. 'Going out for a concert always seems more of an occasion for Singaporeans. Perhaps it is because in the UK there are concerts every day, but Singaporeans look at concerts as something bigger.'

Mogwai performs at the Esplanade Concert Hall on Jan 23.

sigh - the best angle they can get is it's weird to play instrumentals... sob

it's true though. after Etc did a fully-musical and arranged ten-minute e-bow / loop / echo piece recently they were told to play a 'proper song'.

yeahaha... funny how it's not considered "weird" that Classical or club oriented dance music are instrumental?

Worst was the 'pulp' festival at substation circa Gulf ii ... Etc vs Rocket Scientist spent month working up a suite of pieces that all ran into one another and could take an hour to complete - Etc quartet on powerbook loops, violin, effects, samples, and secret weapon of i\d and dongs' drummer .....

... five minutes in: and there was the universal side-of-the-stage symbol for 'last song' (they wanted us to make way for some breakdancer's 3 minute showcase). we were already playing the last 'song'. i don't think the drums had started yet. and the song had another twenty minutes to go if we rushed it and didn't improv much.

those were different times.

i think the trick is to sit in suits / formal wear in a semi-circle and make like you're reading from sheet music. then you can play any old random crap and people will perceive it's art
