A newbie question I guess but does it mean that the higher the ST number, the more expensive and better the strat is? eg ST58 better than ST45?

not really- the number alludes to a certain spec of the guitar.

Can anyone tell the difference between ST-45 and ST72 MIJs?
Differences in term of tone, playibility etc.
I know the pups on ST72 are Vintage US pups and the headstock are those large ones.

its the model number not the year.

Theres a ST-45 model. basswood body.

probably headstock and color options plus a little bit here and there on finishing.

the 45 series are supposed to be entry level Fender Japan guitars but I'm sure with a bit oh zhnnngggg my guitar works done to it, it should be good.

There is no more ST45, replaced by ST50.

The difference between ST45 with the ST72 is in the pickups, bridge and the neck finishing.
