No "brass" section in the forum, so this is the best place to put this.
First, a little background history. The first brass controller was from Akai - EVI (electronic valve instrument). I was really interested in it then, but never got the chance to try it out. EVI died, but the EWI (electronic wind instrument) continued, much to my dismay since I'm a brass player. I never wanted to learn the fingering of a woodwind instrument. Yamaha also had their WX7 then WX5 wind controller which looked very much like the EWI (saxophone/ clarinet style).
Nyle Steiner, who created the EVI, continued to produce his own hand-made brass controller (made to order). The model is like the Akai EVI - left hand move a donut looking contraption at the end of the instrument to switch between higher and lower registers. There are no valves - they are merely 3 buttons which are touch sensitive. And instead of blowing, you actually just buzz into the mouthpiece.
NOW....(drum roll), I just found out the new thing - The Morrison Digital Trumpet (MDT), distributed by Patchman Music (same distrubutor for the Nyle Steiner's EVI). And it looks like this:
Most of the shortcomings of the EVI has been addressed - real valve actions (which require no valve oil), actual blowing into the mouthpiece instead of just buzzing. Not cheap - but really interesting. Any comments from the brass players out there (if there are any)?
