Midi files for the guitarist

OK - here's the deal: I suck at multi-track recording mainly because I'm just too impatient. Some of you will have noticed that I did my early OMs using *video* and now recently I invested in a mic (Shure SM57) to do some half-decent sounding solo-guitar clips.

Now I want to put together some multi-track stuff. I actually have Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro 2 that I mess around with (solo clips recorded using that).
I also have a Yamaha Midi sequencer that I use about 1% of the features of (namely the mini-keyboard with different sounds) and I want to bring these together - create backing using the sequencer and then wail over the top.

So, I've read that some of you download MIDI files off the net and then use these via Cubase or something to create your backings. Can I do this with my setup? Where would I get them?

Cheers

Vern

erm, if ur soundcard got a "What You Hear" function, den you can record wad you hear from the computer, BUT

1) use headphones when recorded, if not got feedback

2) turn off all other sound making programs running, if not you will get extra sounds in your recording

vernplum, is it working for you yet?

what is the "Yamaha Midi sequencer" you are refering to? model?

just wondering, how did you connect the SM57?

No - I don't know how/if I can get external midi files into my sequencer (I suspect not).

My model is a QY70 - one of those handlheld things.

I connect my Shure mic directly to mic socket of my notebook (which I assume goes directly into the soudcard). Seems to work - I don't know any better.

hi vern, i was just looking at Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro 2 website and could not find any mention of being able to Playback MIDI files. It looks more like a multi-track recording software. anyone can confirm?

If you have another software that can playback/edit midi files, then you can connect you computer to the QY70 via a midi cable or the HOST connector. The QY should come with some driver to be installed. Do that. You then select the QY in your midi software and set the MIDI OUT to QY.

You play the midi file, data transmit to QY and trigger the sound (music). Connect the Line Out of QY back to your computer soundcard's LINE IN. Record it with the Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro 2. You can even try to record the instrument to individual track by soloing the tracks in the midi software.

Hee..hee.. quite abit there. Hope my explaination is not making you more confuse.

Hey Soft, i'm not sure if Guitar Tracks can do midi.. but Cakewalk SONAR can do it... I've been programming my own midi backing tracks for abt 3 yrs now...

But to line in the output of the QY to the computer, thats fine... except the QY wouldn't have as much soundfonts as say, Cubase or SONAR. Plus, those 2 programs can have more soundfonts downloaded onto them. I would suggest in the long run, Vern, you should try to get Cubase or SONAR... then use them to program your own midi, then slap some nice soundfonts over them... that would make the ugly midi actually sound quite good! :)
