Mesa Sound

eh, mesa produced quite a number of amps which sound different man. saying "mesa sound" is more ambiguous than saying "gibson tone"

there's the mark series, notably the mark IIC+ and there's the rectifier series, notably the dual rectifier.

these two different sounding amps came to mind when u mentioned mesa tone.

well, u can get these amps with a budget of less than $700 is by using line6's POD X3 Live. it has the mark IIC+, dual rec and triple rec models and so far, i've tweaked tones pretty close to that of john petrucci on mesas

can most probably youtube pod x3 mesa boogie for some vids

Nah, that's not the only way. What I'm saying is that if you are really trying to emulate the two main mesa sounds and if you're on a tight budget, getting a pod x3 would suffice.

There're definitely more ways to achieve tones close to that but they might be as hassle free as getting just one multi effects unit.

If you'd take some time to check these videos out you'll get an idea of what i mean.

Glenn Delaune's Demo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IVozhiT0tM&fmt=18

For this, he shows an example of how he dials in a tone similar to Metallica's rhythm tone. Both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett used Mesa Boogies for a period of time. Glenn's approach to get those tones however, didn't involved selecting the mesa amp models for the amp patch, but the end result was still similar.

POD X3 mesa dual rec tone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5W4396SIDw&fmt=18

This vid shows what the dual rec patch with some overdrive pedal before the amp patch sounds like. It has some phaser effect in and there're some noise artefacts in the background which is most probably due to recording issues. I've never gotten such bg noise with my unit before.

As I Lay Dying - The Sound of Truth (guitar cover) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfWZJEeBxYE&fmt=18

The video description says it all. Amazing tone imo, I'm gonna download his patch right now! lol

**the videos must be viewed in high quality to hear the stuff right thus i added the "&fmt=18" behind the urls to force load HD**

hmmm...

isn't there a way using normal pedals? Buying a whole POD X3 Live just for the mesa sound is kinda... too much lol, may not even like the other effects. Anyone tried the AMT R1 Legend yet?

u can also get the m13 ;p that works great as a multi-fx
u're missing the whole point on amp modelling here if u're recommending that product..

lets be objective here. just like stomp boxes, every multi effects unit is very different.

robboster: the tone of a mesa amp is also dependant on the cab it is plugged into. of course we think of mesa cabs when u talk about mesa tone. getting one simple little distortion pedal isn't gonna get u a mesa tone no matter how boutique it is.

plugging in ur $54675472436 distortion pedal into a solidstate amp in a 1 × 10" combo outfit isn't gonna get u a mesa tone.

if u want to find a distortion pedal that has a lot of distortion, then this thread's title is very misleading.

there are so many relevant replies here but u don't seem to be taking any advice

it will be easier to seach for a high gain sound from effect pedal thats suitable and fit in whatever music one is making then trying to find a cheaper alternative to a "brand" sound.

Actually, I got a carvin nomad (full-tube) that has an excelent clean channel, so as part of my "experimenting", I'm trying to use pedals to try to make it sound more towards the dual rectifier side, instead of towards the JCM 800 side. (Many distortion pedals emulate the JCM crunch)

So I'm trying to get a dual rectifier sound using pedals. The reason I don't really want to get a multi effects is that it's rather wasteful to get a multi-efx just for the dual rectifier sound, and not using the other effects. (already got independent boxes for those)

btw, isn't the tubezone an overdrive pedal?

maybe if u've told us u had a tube 1×12" combo from the start things would have clearer.

yes, multi effects is a waste of money.. who'd want some solid state digital shit plugged into a tube amp?

nope, a tubezone is not just an overdrive pedal. it might be the pedal u're looking for actually.. i'm selling one btw!

Hehehe yes the tubezone is more than an overdrive pedal. Its a rather high gain overdrive pedal, which IMO can already be considered moving into distortion levels. Its a nice pedal if youre looking for mesaish tones, the loose bottom end really reflects a MESA. Some might disagree here but thats what i get from it ( i owned one previously. ) 6 knobs tweakability isnt tonally limited thats for sure.

Apart from that Shinodax and Madwerewolf are selling
