Mesa Sound

Hey guys, what pedals do you guys use if you want to achieve the mesa sound? I'm looking for an analog pedal to get the mesa high gain sound, thanks!

I don't know if mine qualifies as a 'Mesa' sound but I easily dialed in a modern high-gain distortion tone (somewhat like Metallica's and The Haunted's tone) with my Beta Aivin HM-200. I've heard similar tones from the Boss HM-2 which is discontinued and not-so-easily-found these days. But of course my pickups were actually playing a part too, they have a slightly scooped sound by default.

Hope this helps...

for anyone who tried a mesa amp, they will tell you that theres no pedal(single stompbox format) that will do those high gain mesa sound. And that include mesa own v twin preamp as well.

afterall, one is an amp and with totally different circuitry to what that can be put into a effect pedal format(analog or digital format). Imho, one will have to understand the differences first, just to avoid disappointment for this kinda search

hehe, anyway, before the recommendation comes in, can anyone define whats mesa hi gain sound?

+999999 :cool::cool:

Yeah. Unless you get the Mesa itself, you can't get the exact tone. You can get something similar but usually inferior if you're using pedals. My settings work now but I can't say that it's a 'Mesa' tone. I call it my 'fat metal tone' in fact.

You can mould your tone based on the 'Mesa' tone but you won't be able to replicate it without the Mesa itself.

Well, I suppose so, but I can't afford a mesa amp, so anything that comes close will do lol

anyway, for the benefit of anyone reading, can anyone define what make a mesa sound, a mesa sound? The loosenes? The thick mids? The "sagging"/spongy feel" when playing or some other special majik according to different model of mesa amp?

The MI Audio Tube Zone seems pretty mesa ish

Far from it i'm afraid.

I've tried a .50 Caliber, Triple and Dual Rec, Rectoverb and currently use a Nomad 45. The tube zone's far from what any mesa i've tried sounds like. Its just lacks the dark character of most mesa amps. The closest i've heard a stompbox get to a mesa would be a Sansamp GT2, but even that sounds very digital. The best tube preamp i know would be a Damage Control Demonizer. But that can be abit pricey and leave a huge footprint (:

tonal characteristic? Reaction of playin? the initial attack? or some other thingy?

Heh, interestingly, thread like this are quite common, ever since i discover bout guitar and effect forum in 2000. Till now, one of the tihng that didnt change, is still name dropping, without further explaining why.

I just find it funny coz along the way, i have bought stuff/tried stuff based on reading those name dropping. And 95% of the time, nothing sounded close. The other 5 percent, having shades of similarity, but still never sounding quite right, either psychologi.cally knowing that it aint the real thing or due to individual hearing differences.

Heh, not really just targetted at what you mentioned, but more of a general observation

I used to have the GT2, dirty bomb and tube zone. I can tell you none of them sound like that "mesa sound" one may perceive.

Oh well...

Not trying to disappoint those who are in search of the MESA sound thru a pedal, but there is no way u can nail the tone.

I have owned a dual rect tremoverb, simul-class 2:90, and still own a dual rect rev.G blackface and a v-twin, the v-twin is kinda close to the real mesa sound ONLY thru a good poweramp like the simul-class.

Transformer, circuit board, relays, tubes all plays a part. Even the modelers (line 6) doesnt sound convincing. Not sure about the axe-fx though.

U want mesa sound, get a mesa. U want marshall sound, get a marshall. Period.

Hey i have to agree that you cant sound exactly like an amp through pedals but yeahh i do understand the craving for that sound. I think your best bet would be a digital modeller like the digitech hardwire series. To be brutally honest i have tried alot of pedals at stores and my friends place from really expensive custom pedals to generic ones. They all miss the warmth, response and rawness of a real mesa. And the expensive pedals cost like 300+ and they usually have to be drived so another 300 plus. So i guess get a modeller and try to save for a mesa i know its easier said than done.
Alternatively, I have been most impressed by a pedal called the 7th heaven which is a local made pedal by goose. He is very popular on this forum. I think the pedal goes for 350. I think its the cloest u can get. Goose is a really nice chap who is great with amps and pedals do drop him a line.
