Maybe we should start rating the music stores...

After reading the "ripped-off" thread and others in that vein, I was thinking maybe we should rate the music stores and make it a sticky. This could be based on pricing, product availability / selections, service (before & after), quality etc.

It will help guide newbies and the inexperienced on what to expect when going shopping etc. Dont ask me to start it though cos I dunno shit on how to begin. Its just an idea that maybe James would consider.

However, the downside is we might raise the ire of our sponsors who are really doing a great job in supporting SOFT :)

So, how about it?

doubt that would happen, i believe threads like this would bring defamation to various shops be it wrongly accused or if it's really true
with that said james, as owner of soft i believe allowing threads like this would not be beneficial to the forum, i guess being neutral is best, and the idea of sticky-ing threads that point out how good and "horrible" a shop is would potentially invite disagreement, so i would say yea.. it's a potentially dangerous flame bait :)

If the rating is a voting system, I can foresee shop owners or employees rushing in to sign multiple accounts already! :p

Well one thing is to rate shops, but quality... If quality of instrument you should rate brands not store.
But other than that, i concur. We really need this, instead of all the ranting about the too expensive S*** L**, or the ultra bad service G****r C*******n.

In response to the downside: Most, if not all, of our sponsors provide good service and good prices. I forgot the exact wording, but, those who have done nothing wrong have nothing to fear. (If i'm not wrong it's a chinese saying)

something bout if u didnt do no wrong, you wouldnt be scared if someone knocks on ur door on midnight? lol.. the perfect analogy since it's the 7th month lol

yea that would be a good thing to the forum viewers.. but on the other downside is that james might actually have lower numbers to who might advert their shops.. i mean it's pointless investing further if their name's tainted in the forum..
so yea there are benefits and downsides, just that who's it directed to..
and if saying that xyz shop has poor service, overpriced gears, crap products.. the owner of the shop might just retort to whatever's thrown at em.. then next time you know.. flame war!!.. and yea in the end it might just end up with who has more mojo in their grammar wins kinda thing

Why not we praise the good shops? I think we should promote the culture of thanking instead of complaining. Good good?

This way, we give recognitions to the shops and they in turn will try to do better to top the list.

We can start by listing the TOP 5 Shops that we love.

I actually thought this thread "died"....

Yes, this would be a great idea.

how about we rate the buyers or rather "triers" of guitars & stuff? :-)

it's pretty redundant.. i mean tracking various user would be tedious and i believe a thread to point out various shops would be a great way to help those who are new to gear collecting haha..

haha time to start a new thread and start pointing out the shops with great service and gears!! :) haha +1 to you if only threads like this appeared earlier.. thn atleast i wouldnt been conned in my earlier years haha

+1 to Mike@SV, excellent service and great friendly personality. Luther and his staff at Luthermusic come in a very close 2nd, always willing to talk about guitars and life in general, a really jolly and friendly guy who's always smiling. It's telling that he always greets people with 'come in and try our guitars! own time own target!'

Besides these, i've not been too impressed with the service here. However, having been to the US and UK and having been in their shops, i must say that the service there isn't stellar either. Same policies, please ask the salesman if you want to try, etc. In fact, at 1 big shop (Sam Ash's) in NY, there was this guy who was rather gruff and bordering on rude. He refused to look at me to answer my queries and gave short, curt, 1 word answers. Either he was being racist or he wasn't too keen on wasting his time answering the questions of some 18 year old 'kid'. Not saying i'm a 'kid', just that i'm not the the kind of 'kid' who walks into shops and tries everything in sight, abuses the bridges and breaks a string or 2 here and there. Although i wish i could.

1)Definitely TYMC. Never fail to disappoint.
2)Music Theme. Most people never mention it, and i wouldn't say i'm their most frequent customer ever, but they definitely do provide good service.
3)Mike@SV. Others have already said it for me.
4)
5)

4 and 5, soon to come... Right now everyone else seems at the same level.

TYMC, eventhough I only went in once to ask about a cab, the owner(the guy in 30s-40s wearing glasses) was very polite and made my day. I don't really go into guitar stores that often anymore, I'd rather just use SOFT Classifieds. Blackwood is pretty good too.
