match grip, traditional grip which do u prefer and why?

I started practising Trad grip in 2001 after watching Neil Peart's Video. I thought it was a very refreshing and it looks dem cool! But I've played so much Trad now, that I can't play match well. That's the bummer. So I am practicing both these days.

funny thing i keep hearing from the drum teachers i've had to stick to one grip and not change. they say its just too much work learning both grips. i switch between both myself, like when i'm playing a jazz tune or i have to do a fast shuffle. what do u guys think abt this. is it really too much work?
sometimes i feel it is cause i'm not as fast with trad and i'm confined to certain fills. esp with i'm playing like a new orleans type marching kinda rhythm if i play it with matched the feel isn't really there. which one wld u compromise, or are u one of those irritating people who are equally good in both? if u are do u get laid more? less? (hehe)

peace out

technically, for marching purposes, usually the trad gives you a greater control over flams and such. the thing about trad it makes it easier to whip the stick aye, giving that distinct accent you always hear in american marches

ive used matched for pretty long. haha but i still feel that its much easier to buzzroll at low volumes with trad.

ahh nonsense la..wat too much work... might as well tell your teacher to go jump off a building cuz life is soo soo full of work..

seriously man...there's a style and an emotion for both kinds of grips.. i don't know how to elaborate la..that's just me..the way i feel when i play music with the 2 grips.. the kind of emotion i try to inflict into people and the kind of emotion i want to aqquire.. it's all in everything about drumming..
if u don't want to learn one percent of the 100 percent of drumming cuz u find that it's too much work..then don't learn drums at all..cuz u gotta put in your 100 percent effort in learning 100 percent of the workload. yea?

*peacing out..*

Uh, well... everything takes work... but if you wanna excel in one grip, then you gotta practice EVERYTHING with that grip...

I have stuck to traditional grip for the past 3 years... playing everything in traditional grip (yes even rock backbeats). So I guess it took me 3 years to develop my trad grip to this state...

So, yeah... if you wanna develop your traditional grip, then I'd suggest you to stick with it for a long, long time... like Vinnie Colaiuta did since the 80s...

okie cool thanks for your feedback guys, i will tell my teacher now to go kiss his ass...hehehe. yeah i dunno man trad is good a more swinging type feel, i guess u just instinctively swing harder. but concerning my teachers, there might be true too wat their saying. i kinda agree and i kinda dun agree with them. i think wat he means is that u cld spend ur time practicing other more important things then just trying to get both grips. but hey trad grips feels good with certain things. so well i dunno man is the conclusion i have come too hahhaah.........

hi guys im new! :D the eternal battle btw trad and matched. trad grip came out cos of side drums like the ones older drum corps use. ever since the introduction of horizontal carriers, they switched to matched. but its a matter of preference actaully. :D weckl and gadd use trad grip while chambers uses matched alot. personally, i dont really like trad grip.

hey funkzified, youre into percussion ensem playing too? go check out marching season by yanni man. played that for concert quite a few times. quite cool.

marching seasons is a beautiful piece...

thou i nv actually played it..heard my band perc section played it quite a few times...they sound great IMO

Hello! I am now using Traditional grip and it all started when i took drumming lessons. My Drumming teacher uses this grip so when i use matced grip he ask me to try it out. At first i was thinking Wat the heck!? the trad grip feels so funny to me because i nv use it before but now i dunno y i like it best haha! And Doing Buzz rolls i feel trad grip is easier to do. but i see ppl say trad is hard to do buzz rolls actually it matters which grip u start to practice buzz roll i think whichever grip u will be able to do it.

TRADITIONAL GRIP

I think all it takes is some focused practice and determination. I have only started working on Trad grip (switched due to some tendon issues that connects to my last 2 fingers) for about 5 months and I can now pretty much play everything I used to play with matched. The hardest thing I reckon are rimshots (I'm about 80% there now with accuracy and power)....and of course fast single stroke rolls around the drumset that requires you to switch from drum to drum quickly....but really, when I first started I thought I'll never be able to do it....but I'm pretty happy with the results now. And I really think you can play any style with trad, as long as you can hear it, you should be able to play it I reckon.

All the best!

my advice is just focus on one grip. usually it just takes control, there isn't anything you can do with traditional that you can't do with matched and vice versa. the main problem is a proper grip (either one). it's not just about holding the sticks..it's the correct pivoting and tension in the grip as well as position. that's what you have to focus on, whether traditional or matched grip.

I was wondering why you were playing trad in that Olivia Quong clip!

I reckon just make up you own mind on what grip you want to use, just be prepared to practice to make it work for you.
I'm much stronger playing matched grip (again because my first few teachers told me not to play trad) but now i've worked on it a bit i feel i can get a few tones and snare sounds that i use, especially light stuff for jazz, with trad.

Good luck

damn right, trads give you better snare control.
but i find my rolls department suffering there.
it's hard for me to roll if i'm on trads.
I switch grips when I'm into fills or when I'm going heavy on the cymbals.
But ghost cymbal hits and brighter, thinner and softer cymbal hits,
i use my left hand tradded grip to tap the cymbals...

i started with matched grips, they were good when i was doing punk n metal where i needed more power.
but now i've started fusing stuff, i like trads cuz they help me alot with my paradiddles.
after so many months of inconsistent practice it's hard to get your limbs to move independently again...

but then again who am i to speak after not being on the drums for so many months...i'm not even sure when was the last time i sat on the throne, jammed or anything this year. at least 3 times only i think. many months apart, at that.
