match grip, traditional grip which do u prefer and why?

You know... in terms of mechanics... the matched grip is the way to go.

But I prefer the traditional grip. Why? because it just looks cool :D

I've played trad for the past 4 years... can't change back now.

Practicing trad grip is quite a complex process... I'll post some videos or something in the future.

For me I just stick to using the wrist, the thumb and the index finger.

For the right hand, anything goes... I usually end up with an american grip that occasionaly changes to a french grip without me even knowing it.

i'll be honest and say that i TOTALLY do not know how to hold the sticks in trad grip.

I've seen video clips... but it just feels so... alien! Yet when Dave Weckl does it, its just so cool. I also noticed that ghost notes seem a lot easier to control in trad grip.

nah.. Dave Weckl looks cool cuz he has a lot of control with his trad grip. but if u have excellent control for ur matched grip and can play bloody well, who cares wat grip u use? pple just wanna hear u drum.. see your expression and feel the music...

for me i use both trad and matched..so when i'm playing a song i like to alternate my grip.. like during a short pause i spin the stick with my left hand and changed from matched to trad..or trad to matched...

pple say there are pros and cons of both matched and trad grip.. for me i don't believe it..i just believe in superb control...that makes a drummer look good.. =)

u know i feel it is easier to play ghost with a trad grip and strokes are somewat easier to play. i honestly recommend traditional if ur playing in a military band or ur a concert snare percussionist. it just feels better in some sense and somehwat more sensitive. i feel because of how u need to travel ard a drumset a matched grip would be more beneficial. its just that ur body archs unnaturally when u play ard the kit with trad.

With traditional grips I don't see how I can do rolls. I agree that it's good for ghost notes and accents but rolling is kinda hard.

u can still play rolls with a trad grip..u just have to take time to practice..
anyway for a begginer i suggest using matched grip cuz it's the natural way a person will hold a "wooden rod" learning traditional grip is like learning a new language and it takes time for u to familiarise with it..

to learn traditional grip ( a new language)
u gotta learn the ABCs. (the single strokes and all that first to get used to the new kind of grip)
then u learn to form words (compilation of different kinds of rudiments)
learn to form sentences ( short grooves)
then soon u'll form paragraphs and compositions ( your very own drum solo!)
WOOHOO!!

it doesn't matter what grip u use.. cuz u'll still learn to control them professionally in the near future.

i too play with traditional grip.

mayb im influenced by my band background...but it has more control.

at first it felt funny holding smth in between the fingers but my rolls n strokes are much more even n better...

but...being drummers n all...we should learn to balance all grips coz there are stuff u cant do in others...
balancing in all will make u a better drummer no doubt :D

gd luck...

Video of my trad grip technique

Hey guys,

I got a video of my trad grip technique, as requested by wired, but I figured that I should share it with everyone.

It's a video of my finger technique when playing high speed singles

I can't post a video of both hands playing coz one hand has to hold the camera

My technique is a combination of the use of the index finger and the thumb... I might use the middle finger on a good day.

This tech is only for speed bursts... I thoroughly discourage anyone from using this technique for normal playing. Use wrists instead... it's a rotary action.

Give me any feedback if possible... I think it still needs work, particularly on the control required for playing soft.

Ok, I tried to take a video of my doubles but I had to do it by wedging the camera between my chin and neck in order to free up both hands, and as such I couldn't play as well as I usually could... but here it is anyway.

One day I'll get someone to help film it for me... then I'll send a cleaner version. Hope this gives you some insight into my playing, despite its crappy quality. :(

hey funk..that singles with one hand is really smooth...but ur not using a one handed technique right man.. but yea nice smooth stuff really... *impressed*
quicktime couldn't support the doubles video though..don't know why..

show more videos.. =D

?? it does support. just the video cam was abit laggy. but in any case, please come to the outings!! i would want to learn from u!!! how long did u take to get ur left hand right?

AHHH I CAN FINALLY SEE THE DOUBLES!! HAHA SO HAPPY.!! lol

okok anyawy.. i havent' been practicing my rudiments for the past few months cuz i was busy like jamming with my friends learning songs and stuff for the competition and zombie rock bar or rock club or rock pub.. WATEVER!! okok yea so haha we probably meet at the next time soft drummers get together again?? hopefully my rudiments can be smoother after losing touch in it for so long..yea?

whoa i dunno lah but i think its going to take a while before i can do that.
doubles with trad grip.. whoa. :)

my left hand is still so shaky ><
practice practice practice!

Actually, I'm considered a classical percussionist... I jammed around and was in a couple of rock bands but I never liked playing songs by Metal bands, so I usually never stayed for long.

I'm currently in a percussion ensemble, where I get to explore more diversified styles. Besides classical literature, there's also a whole load of pop/rock/jazz stuff... though I'm not always the first choice drummer coz of my age and inexperience, I still love being involved in it.

The drumkit is still my passion though :D Hopefully I'll find like-minded musicians one day.

hi guys im new! :D the eternal battle btw trad and matched. trad grip came out cos of side drums like the ones older drum corps use. ever since the introduction of horizontal carriers, they switched to matched. but its a matter of preference actaully. :D weckl and gadd use trad grip while chambers uses matched alot. personally, i dont really like trad grip.

hey funkzified, youre into percussion ensem playing too? go check out marching season by yanni man. played that for concert quite a few times. quite cool.
