Hello people!

Anyone here wants to order some stuffs from US? Cos i'm planning to get some CTS 500 k Audio pots and maybe some Sprague Orange drops capacitors.

Any local dealers who carry these stuffs?

Any good web-sites that ships to Singapore?

Just want to see the response, and ship all the stuffs at one go, saving us abit of the shipping fee.

:D

Dawn which internet site that ur gonna order form?
I intent to get some stuff as well..
But i think the 5OOK pots are cheap here in Singapore just below $10.
as for the caps i think u can get at same value at Sim Lim.

hey Dawn u might like to combine order in ref to this forum

Ordering Guitar Parts from Black Rose Customs Online

Hi penguin,

I'm looking at this website (shippin rate of US$5)
www.basspartsresource.com

As for the pots, I'm looking for those better quality pots like CTS. The other pots you can find in Sim Lim Tower might not fit exactly and the feel of the pots was not that nice. Heard that CTS pots offer the best feel/control.

As for capacitors, I bought 2 capacitors Sprague orange drops from Berlington Square (opposite Sim Lim Square) i think it was $2 each. Quite expensive, but it's supposedly good enough for Hi-fi amplifier usage. I bought it from a store on the right-side, selling Tubes and other Tube-amplifier stuffs.

Anyone else knows of any good, reasonably priced web-sites that we can do a Mass order or ship over?

I went to Davis Guitar to check out the price of some parts: (all in S$)

500k CTS pots (from Allparts) $9 each
Gibson 3-way toggle switch (Switchcraft) $30 8O
Gotoh 3-way toggle switch (he said it was made in japan) bout $15-$20
Schaller Strap lock bout $15-$20
Switchcraft mono input jack $8

Man... i hope to find the local distributors for these electronic parts... I'm sure we could get em at a fraction of the price (in those darn OVERPRICED guitar stores)

P.S: another  to Davis guitar. Requesting as politely and as friendly as I could, the young man serving me gave me those "one-word" answers... very very snobish. Was it cos I said i wanted to upgrade my "epiphone" lespaul? maybe i should have said my "GIBSON".... really bad customer service.

Shame DAVIS shame!

Dawn...when r u gonna order those parts?
I think the price at David r neutral..

just let me know if ur ordering ok...i like to "tompang"
thanks..

Tell me what you are exactly looking for and I may be able to help you. I order regularly from the US (pots, caps, speakers and the like) for my amp repair work, and may have some of the stuff you want already.

cheers,

mark.

I'm not sure when I'll order... I'm still sourcing for cheap ways to get those parts into Singapore (that are cheaper than local sources) Do post your shopping cart list for me to try n consolidate orders? I feel that Guitar-stores tend to over-price certain "basic electronics" or hardwares. Imagine a normal pick-guard screw going at 40cents a piece?! If you were to go to a hardware store, I'm sure you could get it at a fraction of the price. I'd like to do more homework and really stretch my doollllaaar :p

mudmechanic:
Cool! Hmmm here is my current shopping list

My shopping list:

- CTS 500k Potentiometer Audio Taper [4 pieces]
- Switchcraft 3-way toggel switch (On/On/On) [1 or more]
- Switchcraft input jack [1 or more]
- Schaller Strap locks Black colour [1 set]

Also looking for a good and reasonably priced luthier to fix a popped out Acoustic and Classical guitar's bridge. Maybe slot a nut, re-fret etc.

You are very fortunate to be living in Singapore as many of the goods we buy here are cheaper than they are overseas, due to the duty free nature of the country and the low handling fees. Strings, amps, guitars and other components are much more expensive overseas (a packet of D'Addarios is nearly $10 in Oz). The shops here if they are selling original equipment are offering fair prices.

This said, if you would like help to get the parts in then I am happy to help where I can. I order my parts from Antique Electronic Supply (tubesandmore.com) and don't deal with Stew Mac as they are a disreputable retailer (they screwed Bill Lawrence over his pickups until sued in court), so I may not be able to help you with certain components.

Penguin:

What are you using the pots for? If you are using them in an amplifier then the CTS are suitable ($4US a piece). For guitars they are not as the shaft is too thick for the volume cap. Would suggest the Fender ($5.50 and $6.50) if you have a Strat.

I can get a Fender 5 way super switch (($12 US), but I'm not sure what the selections are. I do have a standard Strat wiring Megaswitch that you can have for $25 Sing if you are interested. Sorry, but I can't get the pickup screws.

Dawn:

Regarding the pots, see above. If they are for a Les Paul Style guitar with a thick top then you need the Gibson ones ($8US). If you want the Long shaft Switckcraft jacks then I have a couple which I can sell you now for $14 Sing. The Three way toggle you need is a Gibson ($14US) and they are guaranteed Gibson, not Allparts packaging. Schallers they don't have as it is really an amplifier component supplier.

If you are interested I can do the work that you require, but I may not be what you call reasonable. You can email me at oddysseus@pacific.net.sg if you'd like to talk further.

cheers,

mark.

hi Mudmechanic..
Thanks for the kind gestures...

Im actually thinking for experimenting with 1meg pots for guitars..
and switching option...The rest is just for me to keep..in case ..

i had tried the1 meg pots thats located at Sim Lim and i like the tone coming from this pots ...i disable my tone pots..
in place i put a toggle switch to split both humbuckers...

oh ya ...im using an Ibanez Rg470 w/out pickguard..
Pls advise if i had made a mistake on the pots...
Tks...

Hey mudmechanic,
I need push/pull pots for my gibson LP standard. Are there any brands you can recommend and help me order? And i broke my pickguard, is there anyway you can order one for me?
Thanks.

In answer to your queries:

penguin: If you like the pots from Sim Lim then maybe continue using them. The top on the Ibanez is thin so you an use the Fender 1Meg pots

Marshall Law: The Gibson pickguards are expensive ($20 US) and the push-pull pots (Gibson) are too ($15 US) but these are short shaft and for the volume pot only. There are some push-push pots which may also work, but I suggest you remove the pot and measure the length of the thread first. I can email the US and check to see if the push-push pots fit.

If the crack in the pickguard is not too bad it may be cheaper to glue it.

cheers,

mark.

Hi Penguin,

The 1 Meg Fender pots are $6.25 US. You may be able to use the CTS pots ($4US) if your volume knob is not a push on type, but has a screw to tighten it (these are a little larger).

mark.

Hi the CTS its a 1 meg pots as well?
If you help me to order how soon get i get those?

Btw i thought of ordering from torresengineering , coz i saw they carry Bill lawrence Pick ups as well..
Thks in advance

Hi mudmechanic,
I heard that RS guitar kits is good on LP. Do you often ships items from RS guitar? I need the push/pull pots. Thanks

I only order from one store in the US - Antique Electronic Supply. They do have some guitar parts, but I am mainly interested in the amplifier components as that's where most of my work is.

Marshall Law: I don't know about the RS kits, so cannot advise there. If you want the push pull pots then you wil have to check the length of the shaft for me (they are only short shaft) and only the volume ones. Check this and get back to me.

Penguin: I have a few 1 meg pots coming via sea so will not be here until next month as I'm shipping them with a speaker. I wish to bring in my parts by sea in the future so the shipping time will be approx two months. If the parts re for projects then this should not matter too much, but if they are important then by air it will be two to three weeks and shipping will be a lot more. I don't know if Torres Engineering actually sell Bill Lawrence pickups as they are now sold direct from Bill himself and are no longer available from stores.

cheers,

mark.
