Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he will quit Manchester United in the next three years.

The Old Trafford boss has been loath to set a date for his Old Trafford departure after reneging on his original plan to retire six years ago.

But in the wake of United's Champions League final victory, the 66-year-old said: 'I won't be managing here any more than three years at the very, very most. Without question. I can assure you of that.'

Ferguson is already the most successful manager in the history of the English game, having won 20 major trophies in his time at Old Trafford.

But he is already beginning to ponder life after football, saying: 'You have to think about time for yourself.

'I think my wife deserves a bit of my time, too.

'The older you get, the more you feel guilty about it.

'My wife, Cathy, was the one who talked me out of retiring last time but she wouldn't do that now.'

But Ferguson, who has been United manager for more than 21 years, insists he has no immediate plans to step down.

'I know I would find it hard to give up managing United,' he said.

'I can't do it, not at the moment anyway.'

Meanwhile, Manchester United chief executive David Gill believes Carlos Queiroz is 'very much in the frame' to succeed Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Ferguson revealed he will finally quit as United boss within the next three years. And although Gill insists he has not been told that by Ferguson himself, he conceded United could follow in Liverpool's example with an internal appointment when the Scot does step down.

'We haven't discussed that,' Gill told the BBC.

'I think his guiding principle over whether he stays is whether he is healthy and still has the desire, which I'm sure he will have.

'It's still three and a half years away, we will look at it at that time.'

Asked about planning for Ferguson's successor, Gill added: 'We are making sure our squad is continually reviewed and improved as necessary and the age of the squad is right so that, when Alex does decide to retire, anyone taking over has a fantastic squad with the right age profile.

'We also have an assistant manager who will be very much in the frame in Carlos Queiroz.

'He's clearly a key part of our success. If you look at what Liverpool achieved in their very successful years during the `70s and `80s (that) was through internal appointments.

'Carlos is a key factor in all the success we've achieved over the last couple of seasons.'

Ferguson has already gone back on one promise to retire but insisted he will not be managing at Old Trafford by the time he reaches 70 in December 2011.

'I won't be managing here any more than three years at the very, very most. Without question. I can assure you of that,' the 66-year-old said.

'You have to think about time for yourself. I think my wife deserves a bit of my time, too.

'The older you get, the more you feel guilty about it.

'My wife, Cathy, was the one who talked me out of retiring last time but she wouldn't do that now.'

Manchester United to spend £50m on transfers in 14 days

Sir Alex Ferguson plans quick-fire pre-holiday transfer spree
By David Mcdonnell 27/05/2008

Sir Alex Ferguson has told the Manchester United board he wants to conclude his £50million summer transfer spending within the next fortnight.

Fergie wants to build swiftly on United's Premier League and Champions League double triumph by bolstering his squad before the start of the mad summer scramble for players.

United completed the signings of Nani, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves within two weeks of the end of last season and Fergie wants this summer's business done before he goes on his annual summer holiday to the exclusive resort of Cap Ferrat in the South of France next week.

Top of Fergie's wanted list are Sevilla's Brazilian duo, striker Luis Fabiano and defender Daniel Alves, who are likely to cost United a combined £30million.

Alves is seen as Gary Neville's permanent replacement at right-back, but Fergie remains keen on Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards, despite his likely £20m price tag.

There is likely to be a maximum of four new faces at United this summer, while three departures are inevitable - defenders Mikael Silvestre and Gerard Pique, as well as injury-plagued striker Louis Saha.

Firstly, it's imperative Fergie does his shopping before Euro starts. If the targeted players do well, their stock will rise and more clubs will come into contention as well.

Well, I'm not too keen on both Sevilla players to be honest. Haven't really seen Luis Fabiano play, but he has scored this season, no doubt about it. Daniel Alves, quite brilliant a player, but I think he's too full of himself. Not my kind of player. I'd rather see good money spent on Micah Richards, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and possibly a young but able defender to replace the recently-departed Gerard Pique.

Also, a nice thought. My friends and I were discussing over lunch today about which players Man Utd should go for. The above names were mentioned, but also these names came up.

Valencia's trio of Raul Albiol, David Villa and Silva.

HAH, the possibility's there since Valencia sucked balls this season. They're gonna miss out on European football and I'm sure their top players were looking forward to European football this season.

What better team to play for, than Manchester United?

but there is already giggsy whos successor is nani so there isnt room for silva.david villa is a good addition but we are yet to see manucho play.he is promising player.

Man Utd is so complete in many ways they dont really need new players except for RB and LB.

im saying the position isnt complete as in no back-up.silvestre is more of a back-up to vidic.o'shea?dont think about it.

and yeah evra isnt that complete.his height disadvantage is his weak point especially during corners.but he is fast.damn fast so that makes it up for him.

I think Evra's height isn't a papadum cos' he's one of those that grabs one of the posts during corner kicks. Plus he looks like the black Michael Jackson. :D

We definitely need a striker - anyone lesser than Benzema or Berbatov will be a disappointment although I haven't seen Huntelaar in action. ManUnited needs intelligent and clinical players and the two aforementioned Bs fit that description perfectly.

Silvestre may be going back to France and he actually covers Evra very well. If Silvestre goes we'll only have JOS to cover that position - not the best option IMHO.

You can actually watch bits of Manucho at youtube. Quite a good finisher but one has to see how he copes against better players.

Cheers

actually, his height is like 'standard' for fullbacks.. most fullbacks are short(er) and fast.

so it isn't really a disadvantage.

ESPNsoccernet - Europe - Real don't want conflict over Ronaldo - Calderon

Real don't want conflict over Ronaldo - Calderon
Updated: May 29, 2008, 4:06 PM UK

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has attempted to soothe relations with Manchester United over their pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting: 'We are not going to start a conflict'.

Earlier this week, United threatened to report Madrid to FIFA over persistent comments emerging from the Spanish capital about their interest in the Portuguese talisman.

However Calderon - to whom quotes about Ronaldo have been attributed regularly over the last two years - has moved to calm United's anger.

'You can't buy what the owner doesn't want to sell,' he told Sky Sports News.

He is also quoted as saying on skysports.com: 'We have not interfered with Manchester United's contract agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo.

'We're sorry that Manchester United - a club with which we have an excellent relationship - is annoyed with us because Real Madrid have nothing to do with that aspect.

'I want to clear this up with him and assure him we are not going to influence any player to break a contractual relationship.

'We are not going to start a conflict.

'If a club doesn't want to sell a player, why would we insist that they do sell him?'

Fckin' Pussies.
