Yo people

Just wanna share my experience with Malcolm..Guitar Tech Jedi Master 8O .
My guitar is a Custom Strat made frm various parts (WD, Musickraft, Kent Armstrong). Birdeyes maple neck with ash (transparent blonde color) body.

The set-up by the first guy (paintwork was ok but he did'nt use filler for ash body) was'nt impressive. Buzzing, improper bridge adjustment, the tremolo claw screw was slanting etc. Big mistake !!! Dun wanna take the risk of ruining my first custom guitar, I gave Malcolm a call etc...

That's where the transformation began......Malcom gave so many pointers on wat goes wrong & he even advised to go back to the first guy !!!

Left the guitar for one day at Malcolm's place & that baby of mine played like DREAM!!!!!!!!
He custom made the nut (Micarta), added shin to the neck , levelled the frets, re-adjusted the bridge , claw screw etc..the rest was HIStory.
The neck was straight like an arrow, ultra low action without buzzing!!!

Thank u sooo much , bro!!! A first class luther workmanship!!!. I dun mind the bill cos it's really worth it.
Great attitude too. If Malcolm opens a guitar shop, I'll be the first to send my guitar back for refinishing job.

Highly recommended!!!

I'll post some photos of my baby soon.

Malcom's a real guitar luthier.

Charges are according to quality. Not cheap man, not cheap, but hella good.

Yea man. Sent my guitar to him too. he works magic. didnt think the setup wld make a lot of difference.....i knew it wld make a difference lah.....but after he set it up...it made a hell lot of difference! cldnt believe i was playing on that guitar b4 the setup and thinking it was ok!

you get what you pay for i guess. malcolm is sg's only real luthier i guess. the rest sometimes hit, sometimes miss. malcolm never misses the target, hehe. someday, i will also send my precious guit for a proper setup with da man!! hehe

yup. malcom and only malcom will setup my guitars.....
i kinda know how to do it.... but whats the point if i cant do it as well as him. Leave it to the guitar setup Jedi master :p

Hi

For my set-up..it's more than a normal setup actually wif fret-dressing etc..it cost me abt $400. That include a custom made nut using Micarta. Micarta nuts have been used by Martin guitarmakers since 60s , I think.

The price may seem a bomb but definately worth it. As one of u guys pointed out, some guitar repair guys either hit or miss..but never Malcolm.

One thing which set him apart frm the rest is his atitude plus super workmanship of course. I've send guitars to Guitar Workshop, Dino of Swee Lee, Beez, Phillips of Hougang, Musicfactory etc.... Malcolm is the best. He willingly shares wif u abt every aspects of the set-up, how to see un-even frets, etc.

Save up a bit, just send ur precious guitars to him .

geez....

$400 setup and the guitar that I need setup worth only $200-$300.
I guess his service only worth for $1000 guitar and above.

Hi

Dun worry..it's good. I just keep on playing n playing my guitar after the set-up. It felt sooo good & ease to play.
U can PM me if u wanna test my guitar or go to Malcolm directly to test guitars he already set-up ...especially his Reverends :D

For guitars like TGM or lesser quality..hmm.. there'll be some limitation of course. U can't make a TGM strat sound better than an American made Fender strat just wif setup alone. U know, wood quality, pickups, tremolos material etc. But on ease of playing, balance in sound for pickup selection (neck to bridge), tremolo playing..yeah Malcolm's setup makes a lot of difference

My two cents...

Just for info, I'm not associated wif Malcolm or watsoever. Just sharing my experience after reading up all the raves abt Malcolm and trying it myself. It's true indeed!

Hi guys,

Thank you for your very kind words. I always do my best in everything I do and I thank God for the ability to read the neck of the instrument correctly and to nail the "perfect" set up.

Most musicians don't realize how much a professional set up will do for their instrument. A well set up instrument frees up the musician to explore many more musical possibilities rather than being hampered by the playability of the instrument or be "stressed" by the limitations of the instrument.

Just to clear the air. I don't charge $400 for a set up. The $400 included a fret dress and new Micarta nut. It would be ridiculous and highly exhorbitant to charge $400 for just a set up!!

My prices are expensive but I would like to believe I'm worth every penny. I provide a highly personal service and will work with the client till he or she is happy with the set up.

Contrary to what some of you believe and as much as I appreciate your confidence and faith in me, I'm not always 100% hit. I'm only human and we're definitely not perfect beings. I do miss the target once in a blue moon but I do strive for absolute perfection.

As what Jay_Clones had mentioned, my 1st advice to him upon inspecting the guitar was to send it back to the individual who'd put the guitar together.

I believe in 2nd chances and always recommend that the guitar be sent back to whom had worked on it prior to my inspection. 99% of the time, the owner would just rather me work on the instrument and again, I really do appreciate their confidence and faith in me.

I always explore all options with the owner of the instrument and come to an agreement to the course of action before commencing work.

I also perform the least invasive procedure and will always strive to maintain the originality of the instrument.

I use the best components, materials, and resources available for all repairs.

Please feel free to e-mail me at empty71 at hotmail dot com for quotes and appointments.

and empty71 carries the Reverend guitar series! Great stuff... I love the Slingshot!!

Doode, I heard that they are no longer making the ones with single coils eh?

Yeah, Reverend discontinued the Avenger TL and Commando models. The Avenger TL is the 3 single model while the Commando is the sing/sing/hum model. Good new is I have both models in stock :D The Avenger TL comes with Maple board which is also no longer an option.

Oooo...old topic. Just wanted to let you guys know that I went to Malcolm to set up my guitar today, he did an awesome job. Was worth my money. Beez is the go-to guy for pickups and guitar electronics (he did an awesome job with my pickup installation), Malcolm is the go-to guy for guitar set-up. Both are luthiers who are really good at what they do. Haven't tried the others yet (I will, someday, when my guitar requires setup or if I buy a new guitar) but I'm sticking to these two guys. Thanks Malcolm, really appreciate the work you put into my guitar. Quoting McDonald's, "I'm lovin' it".
