Maintenance + intonation help

Haha... u guys won't believe how a little maintenance can improve guitar playability man...

I just picked up my strat copy and did a fret cleaning with the dunlop 01 and 02 solution and the fret was as smooth as ever and I had literally no problem sliding... but I accidentally drop my guitar from my work bench... in the end got a cool "wood distorted view" looks kinda cool... like a bird eye maple shape...haha maybe can experiment making it a cosmetic beauty...

Now I wanna do the intonation for my sz320... anyone know how to do it? Must I even use the truss rod... I tried doing the intonation ytd and the guitar sound abit weird... need help from all the pro bros here... (pls take note I am newbie at guitar)

urm, for the part of after intonation it sounds wierd, i think the guitar does get slightly out of tune after turning the truss rod. in any case, heres a website which shows ALOT about DIY guitar stuff. the link i've given is a direct one to the Setting up of ur guitar. hope it is of help, and don't let the DIY spirit die! :D

i believe from 0.09 to 0.10 wouldnt affect that much, but if u're dropping from 0.10 to 0.09s the high E might break, same with a 0.09 to 0.10.

What are you talking abt?

er, i meant, when u change strings from 0.09 to 0.10 gauge, the old intonation ( of the 0.09 ) should work fine? however if u're changing string gauges from 0.10 to 0.09, or from .09 to .08 then the high E string is bound to break when u attempt to tune it. *at least, thats what happened to me, on my tele, didnt dare try on other guitars x.x ruined 2 packs of strings on my tele that way, heart pain pain! apologies for any confusion/misperceptions caused*

p.s. correct me if im wrong, plz.

Well, there will be some slight intonation changes lah... but really man, slightly off intonation means a lot esp when you are recording stuff.

Hmmmm... I don't get what you mean by the high E is bound to break? Thats a very strange notion... and man! You can go and buy seperate strings... ;) No need to buy a whole pack...

alamak, that was beginning of last yr, damn dumb still, dunno whats called one string. er... my tele was set up for 9s, but i wanted 8s, for easier bending and stuff, so i got a set of 8s, and attempted to restring, eveyrthing went fine, until i tried tuning the high E string, and it snapped, twice. x.x heart pain sia. iono abt other pple, but after it happened twice i didnt attempt it again. :D

about the recording part, i recently got my converter, and don't know nuts about recording  what do u mean by a difference when recording? could u gimme an example? thanks!

Eh... I haven't got a proper set-up yet... anyone knows how much it will cost and who is best for it?

BTW I planning to get a ds-1, any recommendation? I tried the dod distortion; the grill cheese(yellow) and a red unit... I didn't like the yellow unit cause sound too ear splitting... but the red one has a very nice warm tone if u max out gain and palm mut... but then again it is quite sucky on other settings...

Anyone knows how much it will cost and where to get it?

Intonation affects how well your tuning holds are you progress up the frets. So if your intonation is flat, everything you play on the lower frets, like open chords, barred chords, solos... from frets 1 - 5.. .will be in tune. BUT, when you start moving higher, your notes will be flat.

Now image how that would sound in a recording? Rhythm all fine... solo on the 12th fret, YUCKS, totally out of tune. :) In a recording studio, with a good producer/soundman, you really cannot escape the reality of having good tuning and intonation. Even fretting too hard will cause notes to be out of tune AND it is obvious in a recording!

for real strats..switching between 9s and 10s wont be a problem the old tech from guitar gallery told me..but for strat copies i dunno

For the best setup, Malcom who is empty71 on this site. Be warned, he's not cheap.

What kind of tone are you looking for? Anyway, do a search here, there's so many topics on distortion/overdrive pedals.

Thanks shredcow for the input... whoa didn't know how it could affect playing till now... haha... I started a new thread for the distortion pedal...

One thing strange though... while doing intonation u play 12 fret harmonics right? then u play a fretted 12 fret note... but the finger on the fret shld be closest the 12 fret right?

I just realise that diff positioning of fingers have a bit of diff sound...

Thats right for intonation.

Well, strictly speaking, there isn't a different in pitch if you put your finger nearer to or further from the fret. Its just a good habit to position your finger as close to the fret without touching it, so that you will not get a buzzing sound (too far) or a muted sound (finger touching fret/on fret).

And i would suppose your different position, different sound is due to pitch changes? Or tone changes?

I think it is tone... sounds more full and fat when fretted... pitch wise the same means intonation is set right?

urm cow, what do u mean by "flat" ness? i assume the sound isnt as good as b4, but in what way?
an er... pitch is just means the tuning is correct, no?

p.s. correct me if im wrong plz, anyone.
