3 ways to look at it
1) Silence mean consent, post away. (Downside is that, friend concern, might not like his older picture to be online)
2) Send a PM to James(soft admin) and ask him bout it
3) try facebook or any those "make friend spam music spam life" kinda sites, can reach bigger amount of people(even though pictures online, at least only friends within friends group can see. Unless set to public, then even if friend concern not happy to see old picture online, as least can come up with story on how much you treasure friend and thats the only way you can think of, to find them, after all these years. At the same time, can praise bout how technology pull people closer)

How about facebook? I 've met up with a lotta old friends via FB.
Doubt you wud get much millage in soft by putting up his pix ... - even in the mainstream threads ... unless U know that your old friend is also a soft addict like the rest of us ..
