locking tuners

I'm currrently using the Gotoh Kluson lockin type now though previously I had used Schaller. Friend of mine using the sperzel and I'm getting it next - staggered string post & all so no need string trees...I saw availabel at Davis.

Like they make a difference on a locking trem. Can't tell you how stable they are, but when I have to unlock the nut to release the fine tuners (like after 3 wks, rarely), the tuning remains.

The 21:1 gear ratio is a BIG plus for finer tuning, though you must get a string winder. Don't recall the price, but I think it was... 100 bucks? Or 120?

Are they considered locking? :P

In anycase, ChanMin, what tuners are you using now? You don't wnana buy a set that requires you to drill new mounting holes aye?

There's the steinburger 40:1 (!) tuners @ stewmac.

pardon me being noob,
how does these locking tunners work?
do they really lock like those locking nut on a floating trem?

ok field report time ... went down to G77 today ...

ended up with a nice set of gold gotoh locking tuners. not sure of the model... as long as it locks im happy. arnd 90bucks for the set of 6 inline.

saw mr paulo installing his K7 ...and i could resist getting beez to put that poison on my tele too ... i dont need a tone knob anyway...

can a gotoh wilkinson, combined with locking tuners, be used to do vibrato both ways? (pulling up and down)

will it be stable and will the stings return to zero after a heavy stunt?

tuning stability depends on several factors. First thing to consider is, when using locking tuners, there is no need to loop the string round the machine heads. Pull it tight through the machine head and then lock. Looping the string makes the locking machanism irrelevant, and of no benefit.

Next would be to consider how well the guitar is setup. Is the floyd or trem in 'zero' position? Is the nut well cut? There is not really a need for locking machine heads most of the time, esp. if they guitar is well set up.

Hey ChanMin can post pics of the tuner once you fixed it? maybe some review on it? thanks alot!
