Local scene: Lacking music quality or support?

[=bernardgoh

totally agree bernard , just cos u 've got talent, got good songs doens't mean jackshit.

nobody's gonna feed u a silverspoon , defintely not a country like singapore

hahahaa.... i like that... free gift and lucky draw.....
anyway, the only few gigs that i see has full house crowd is those which charge lesser, smaller venues and big name bands... other then that... is always, " my friends coming to support me" crowd. :)
if you think you got the talent and no label wanted to sign u. u got to work harder to get yourself known so that the record label would come beg for you. :)

well, is hard to educate people when they always have someone feeding them with a silverspoon. :P just see how many of singaporean still living off their parent at the age of 22 and above? if you always think you can't make it full time in music, you never would. :)
anyway, i'm not in singapore anymore. reside in sydney now. :)

we have good musicians, there's no denying that. be it indie, ska, metal, new generation of death(core), DIY punk scene. ive seem them all and they can do wonders.
in the end its abt how you market your band. educating society isnt that effective because society educate themselves and CHOOSE what they want. especially in sceptic-singapore. if you cant find it here, then search abroad. it takes time and patience, but you'll find that scene you're looking for that accepts you.
here's a tip: networking sites like myspace isnt just abt adding pretty girls or total plays to make you feel good.

I think Warren Buffet (he was ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world during the first half of 2008, with an estimated net worth of US$62 billion) once said something like -

"If you cannot occupy people's minds, then you will not stay in business for long."

Of course we are talking about if you want to be a commercial success and appeal to the masses. I really don't know what exactly Indie musicians here want to achieve. Just hope that they don't have an elitist mindset, if you know what I mean.

It is undeniable that there are lots of really talented people everywhere.

It is just up to a record company to spend tons of money to expose the individual or group to the masses and make sure they occupy people's minds constantly.

It is marketing 101.

In other words, music is subjective but if you can please at least 60% of listeners across all age groups with some catchy tunes, supplemented by aggressive marketing and memorable image - anybody with talent can be a superstar.

So, my point is - I don't think record companies here want to spend much on singers here for the simple fact that

1) The Singapore market is puny

2) There are not lots of talents with real drive and marketable image

3) There is no real emphasis on the arts, it's not really our collective priority

4) Sorry to say but the consumer mindset here is much leaned towards 'Western singers and bands' are always better and more entertaining to listen and watch

That's all I have to say for now.

ps You don't have to agree with me.

tihnk i have to agree that there are hardly many bands who would really push themselves to really make themselves known or heard. not many have the determinatiojn or the drive or passion to do that

Maybe it has largely to do with the fact that it takes a lot of money to market yourself here ie. do promotions, buy radio time, hold regular gigs etc etc.

I am sure there a lot of bands with that ambition but not the know how and of course, the moolah.

If got money also, there is still GAS.

Which would you want - a gleaming new PRS/LP/Strat or spend money promoting your music with no certainty people will accept your music?

i think we should have less of P2P gigs and more free gigs. Singaporeans love free stuff.

And find those 'i dont play for money' bands.

i dont know lah!

True, you don't know lah. :)

Cuz with your business model, I also don't know who's going to pay for the equipment, venue and licensing.

As with all previous threads which have existed before, it's all talk, no action. :)

Talk never cooked rice...

Let's see how it all unfurls. :)
