local bands

To me, here's the really under-rated band: B-quartet. :)
They've got the substance, but not well-marketed, yet.

I VERY MUCH AGREE! great stuff they have. there's so many unknown local bands that are far superior than the mainstream acts, it's just the lack of management really imo.

heh, local bands that play original already very small and fragmented, still wanna do over rated and under rated ah. Like that sure cut to pieces and nothing much left after a while, being over rated or under rated.

Marchtwelve, Lunarin and Astreal are underrated in my opinion...

really? underrated? imo they are well recognised in the local music scene. playing at big shows, released their albums and ep's. no offence to them, they are good. the real underrated bands are those bands still in the local underground scenes, playing in small venues such as blackhole 212 and etc.

just my 2 cents

agreed.

bands and/or music produced are a matter of opinion i believe

all local bands are perpetually under rated by locals, who have the mentality that foreign bands are better. this is not good, we must step up support for ALL local bands.

hehe, our individual opinion prolly very over rated most of the time

anyway, for some positive light, recommend a local album that we might have heard recently and think that its worth talking bout it.

Personally, i love b quartet new album and looking foward to lunarin new album.

And of the best buy of the 1st quarter of 2010, my vote goes to Humpback oak boxset! Splendid packaging and everything in it.

Theres no over rated or under rated involved, just for the love of their music from those people on same island as me!

no lah just want to get an opinion, cus i've been seeing the same bands in the limelight over and over while some other bands are better than them don't get anything. also this can help gig organisers to choose what bands to have in their gig, and help this underrated bands.

Bro Pathein bro, meeting Lunarin later. Hopefully, they will pass me a pre-mastered album as well. Mastering at Maine, Portland next month. The new album 'duae' should be out by July/ August.

i dont think ther are any overrated underground bands in Singapore. They just seem popular at gigs cuz they know many others in the same circuit, therefore well supported by their friends.Regarding the issue of always seeing the same bands at gigs,i think its becuz there are simply not enough bands that are up to performing standard/active enough to get gigs for themselves. All the above juz my opinion of course.

Yeah, I personally feel that in general our entire local scene is underrated. Look how our bands are always overshadowed by foreign bands...

Underrated local bands are bands playing in pubs/weddings/family days/etc! They deserve a spot at baybeats/Ignites etc. and most impt of all, they are paid to play.

Rudra is a decent band in my view, I see some potential for further progress as well :D. Slaughter me this for saying the truth but Astroninja is based on 80% hype and 20% music to get where they are (but good musicians nonetheless, lets give them credit when its due). I was rather perplexed when I saw their profile on a goth site trying to promote their music which is odd seeing that the band was neither goth rock, death rock, EBM, industrial, horror punk or even gothabilly so naturally, I was really skeptical and annoyed because packaging yourself in a guise in order to penetrate an untapped market oozes of desperation and also, bands on myspace who try adding you and then leave a compilation of their youtube "hits" on the comments page. Thanks for "lagging" my computer, its already on its last knees . That being said, the true warriors who ought to be respected and given more focus are the ones who give their all without any need for pretenses irregardless of what the venue is. It could be Blackhole, Baybeats or even a jamming session at Beat Merchants but if the consistent dedication is there and committing to the cause without the need for false adulation is embedded inside their heart, I am certain that they will succeed based on their merit and tenacity to go on, even if it takes years. To those weekend gig heroes who still take the time to drink kopi as a band together after practice, here's my salute to you \m/

The issue, in my humble opinion, is not where or how you choose to market yourself, but whether the market responds to you. If the rest of the goth community shared your skepticism, the band would not have been able to garner a following there. Was this the case?

If you're successful at what you do, should you still be considered desperate? In that case, I would gladly ooze of desperation myself, in all that I do!

It seems to me that this thread is heading into: Overrated = effective marketing, underrated = ineffective marketing. Is Justin Beiber overrated, or just very well marketed to his target audience? Remember that just because one group of individuals (and this can include ALL SOFTies) consider someone overrated doesn't necessarily make it so. It's all relative anyway.

There will always be people who work harder and play better music who don't get the recognition they deserve, partly due to luck, but mostly due to ineffective publicity on their part.
