Legendary Heavy Metal Vocalist RONNIE JAMES DIO Dies - May 16, 2010

My brothers, sisters, friends in Rock.

Yesterday was a sad day as we mourn the passing of Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald James Padavona; July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010) who has rocked our world for more than 40 years, and has influenced many rockers. He has inspired many a young man to sing rock music. Personally, I know more songs sung by Dio than by any other person alive. I'm a full grown adult, yet I still feel like crying when I heard the news. Dio has been a big part of my life since I was little, and I've been listening (and still do) to his songs for a very, very long time.

I am looking for like-minded people to organize a tribute, a celebration in honour of a legend, right here in Singapore. Other countries are doing it too, and I think that many other people here wont want our country to be left out. If possible, a free-for all concert, no tickets, as Dio's achievements and songs should be able to be celebrated by all, but if that is not feasible, then maybe a nominal entry fee should be imposed to cover administrative costs.

If anyone knows of anybody or any organisation/establishment who is kind enough can sponsor the venue and equipment, please let me know. I'll be glad to organize and handle the red tape.
We can tie in with commercial companies for sponsorship also. Anyone else with organizing experience and is interested in going ahead with this endeavour can kindly contact me too.

The aim of this concert will be to celebrate the life and songs of Ronnie James Dio, so I think that a prerequisite for all bands to play only songs sung by Dio should be in order, right?

I am not doing this for financial gain (though that would be nice, if possible). I just want to make a tribute to a great musician who helped shape my direction in music, and touched my life in ways I could have never foreseen.

So I am appealing to all of you, my brothers, sisters and friends in Rock, for any help, no matter how small, that you can provide me in this undertaking. Currently, I am still collating data. What I need most of all right now, is information. Where to hold it, how much, where to get interested backing/sponsors, equipments and such. Licensing issues, I can handle.

There are a lot of bands who are willing to take to the stage for this, and I am looking at a few venues for it. If this happens, it's going to be really, really huge I guess. Dio was very well loved, and he has quite a few hardcore fans.

I remember in '92, when I was 10 years old, my late aunt dragged me along to the Expo. No, not the one at Changi. The ROCK Expo. It was crowded, and they were playing rock songs throughout. I distinctly remember the song "Rainbow In The Dark" played by some band there. That is what I want to re-enact, in some ways.

I think think that all the bands performing need to submit their songs too, not only to submit to Compass, but also to ensure that not everyone plays the same song over and over again, so lets say 3 songs per band. Jatt Ali, Singapore's very own Dio, alongside Ministry Of Rock, has confirmed with me their interest to be part of this. Other acts such as RNR, Still Here 17, Naga, Romey Helven and many more have also expressed interest.

I also need more heads to brainstorm with.

I'm currently looking at either Dhoby Ghaut Green as a viable place to hold it, but am also contacting other private organisations/establishments to enquire if they are interested in holding this event.

Whatever people may say, whatever song is in the current charts, whatever it is, ROCK is here to stay.

Let's make our presence known. Again.

We have the people. All we need is the place, the equipment and the time.

Will we Rock?

Stand up and shout!

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take it away

Damn.. just heard the news of Dio's passing...
Grew up listening to his songs and influenced in many ways by his music...
R.I.P. Ronnie ... :( We will miss U.

RIP Dio. You will be greatly missed.

Touching tribute from Lars Ulrich:
"Dear Ronnie, I just got off stage in Zagreb. I was met with the news that you've passed on. I'm kind of in shock, but I wanted you to know that you were one of the main reasons I made it onto that stage to begin with. When I first saw you in Elf, opening for Deep Purplehttp://www.starpulse.com/Music/Deep_Purple/ in 1975, I was completely blown away by the power in your voice, your presence on stage, your confidence, and the ease with which you seemed to connect to 6,000 Danish people and one starry-eyed 11 year old."

Ulrich also opens up about his poignant first meeting with Dio as a 13 year old: "In the fall of 1976, when you played your first show in Copenhagen, I was literally in the front row and the couple of times we made eye contact you made me feel like the most important person in the world... I made the pilgrimage to the Plaza Hotel to see if I could somehow grab a picture, an autograph, a moment, anything. A few hours later you came out and were so kind and caring... I was on top of the world, inspired and ready for anything. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to run into you a half dozen times or so and each time you were as kind, caring and gracious as you were in 1976 outside the hotel."

He calls their first gig together in 2007 "a f**king honor and a dream come true" and wishes he had called Dio in his final days: "I kind of p**sied out, thinking the last thing you needed in your recovery was feeling obligated to take a phone call from a Danish drummer/fan boy. I wish I'd made that call."

What a sad day it is to hear that a great man and vocalist has passed on.

I remember on the Heaven & Hell tour here, during one of their slower songs, me and my friends took out our lighters and lit them in the air. And our flames were pretty big. Caught the attention of Dio and he pointed at us and gave us a thumbs up. After that me and my buddies were all "DIO POINTED AT US!" Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Glad i got to see him live.

RIP DIO, you are truly missed.

now the likes of Randy Rhoads, Cliff Burton and Cozy Powell does have probably the best metal vox to jam with...

thank you RJD for blessing us with your metal genius-city..

hehe, a strange land in singapore it is...

on the front page, Dr Goh keng swee died at age 91, a part of the history of modern singapore. Nobody seem to talk about him.

a rock and roller from far away land passed on(rip btw), yet getting more noticed.

Brewtal!!! \m/
Of course.. a classic example of local 'scene' < international scene
and Dio is probably equivalent to LKY in this forum

and strangely the generation that grew up when Dr Goh is around is also the same generation that grew up to black sabbath.

nevertheless i'm not trying to compare, both were great men in their respective professions. RIP

to be completely honest and frank, i was never a dio, rainbow or black sabbath fan(no matter whose era). i wasn't even electrified by the music or performances. yet i have respect for the man whose voice was actually, to tell you the fact, powerful, but nothing special or capturizing, and yet was able to last in the business and eventually in rock history as one of its pioneers. my conclusion is, for possibly the greatest underated singer in heavy metal(in my mind at least), i would say he rates just as high as any legend and his achievements are to be remembered forever.

There's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life's a never ending wheel'

There's no end and beginning
