Korg to Cubase Connection Problem

I'm having a headache trying to hook up my Cubase SX to my
Korg Triton via an od steinberg USB-2-midi converter box. Can anyone out there
explain to me why after installing the driver (which i understand windows XP doesnt
actually need the driver anyway) I still cannot detect my triton on the cubase?
Is it to do with the steinberg being too old (5yrs)? But it used to work on a
mac and now the output light is blinking non-stop..wat does it all mean?

it is blinking when you press 'play' in the cubase?

on the triton, you need to make sure that you are accepting midi in from "midi" and not the PCIF. try switch the midi cable from IN to OUT and OUT to IN.

also, put triton on SEQ mode. check that the individual channels are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,910 ......

1) Misconception. XP needs the driver. So does MAC.

2) Does WinXP recognise your driver? Look under Control Panel|SystemDevice Manager|Sound Video Game Controllers

Should be listed here

3) Did you install the driver correctly? The right way in most cases (for my M-Audio Midisport and Edirol keyboard) is to install the driver WITHOUT plugging in the interface unless you are told to do so during the isntallation.

4) Does CUbase recognise the driver? Look under Devices|Device Setup|MIDI|All MIDI Inputs

Should be listed here.

The other issues have been addressed by soft.

If your midi out LED is blinking, it is likely you got the connection wrong as James put it. It should be: Triton midi out -> PC midi in. The midi in LED should be blinking.

Hi ppl,

thnx fr replying. sorry, it's my MIDI IN that's blinking, not the out.

2) Does WinXP recognise your driver? Look under Control Panel|SystemDevice Manager|Sound Video Game Controllers

- i looked there and all i see are audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, realtek AC'97 Audio and Video Codecs. I presume i should be finding a steinberg or korg triton device right? unfortunately it's missing

3) Did you install the driver correctly? The right way in most cases (for my M-Audio Midisport and Edirol keyboard) is to install the driver WITHOUT plugging in the interface unless you are told to do so during the isntallation.

- initially i kept getting a prompt asking for driver, but after having installed the steinber driver i dun get that prompt anymore. does that mean i did install correctly?

4) Does CUbase recognise the driver? Look under Devices|Device Setup|MIDI|All MIDI Inputs

- my cubase does not recognise the driver, it does not appear under All MIDI Inputs

currently my set up is Triton midi out -> Steinberg in -> Steinberg out -> USB PC in. under the triton global settings, I selected midi channel 1 and local control off. note receive - ALL. midi clock external

midi in is blinking regardless of whether i pressed play on cubase or not, is that normal?

wen switch the midi cable from IN to OUT and OUT to IN, the lite does not blink anymore, so i guess previous set up was rite?

cld it be possible that the steinberg driver is too old for my xp?

Did you download the latest drivers from M-audio's website for XP? The drivers should be detected in both Cubase and the Control Panel. Cable routings and Triton internal settings seems OK.

Sorry, just realised you mentioned "local control off". I hope you meant "local notes off". I'm not a Triton user, so I don't know the exact words you are seeing on the LCD. But "local control off" generally means turning your keyboard into a slave and you may not be able to send any midi signals out, only receive. "Local notes off" is the right setting - to prevent echoing of notes.

Still, I will still try to reinstall latest drivers as they should be visible.

i downloaded wat i tink is the latest driver from the internet for Steinberg coz my midi interface is not an m-audio.

btw forot to add tat my sounds and audio device properties midi music playback only show the default Microsoft GS Wavetable SQ Synth. that shld be showing the triton or my steinberg rite?

Sorry again. Forgot to add that the Steinberg's USB-2-midi interface apparently is able to use M-audio's Midisport 2x2 drivers.

I hold no responsibility for installing these drivers!

Read this:
http://nuendo.de/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=44903&sid=2bf3f1a62ffbe6825d89291a3071cd9e

I guess should be quite reliable since it comes from the Nuendo website. I think the original drivers were meant for Win98. Are your drivers WinXP?

Yes, your device properties should show USB-2-Midi drivers.

Should be a Steinberg device.
Then something wrong with installation.

- initially i kept getting a prompt asking for driver, but after having installed the steinber driver i dun get that prompt anymore. does that mean i did install correctly?

Hard to say. Have to be very clear about the installation. Check the manual.

I tried to be "keh kiang" and installed my Edirol driver while the keyboard was plugged into the USB. Of course, it was not detected and didn't work.

- it does not appear under All MIDI Inputs

Then something is definitely wrong. If Cubase can't locate the driver, you can't use the midi interface.

- midi in is blinking regardless of whether i pressed play on cubase or not, is that normal?

Whether you press play or not is not important.
The important thing is whether it blinks when
1) you do not touch your keys (not normal)
2) only when you touch your keys (normal)

- cld it be possible that the steinberg driver is too old for my xp?

A model no would be useful.
However, if it's too old, it would noteven be XP compatible and installation would have terminated.

That's a cool piece of new. Just like how the Alesis Nanosynth can use Edirol's SC-8820 drivers under WinXP. (Alesis does not have any WinXP drivers).

Actually this depends a lot on the model of the interface. Many interfaces actually blinks even when idle, as long as the connection is made. The blinking increases in frequency when midi signals go through.

If the LED blinks but does not change in frequency when midi signals is going through, then something is wrong.

1.Midi in keep blinking:
That's normal, because Triton sequencer keep sending internal Midi Clock.
If you don't want to see this, check the Triton manual. See how to disable or switch off the clock signal.

2.Check your USB Midi Interface (if it works well on Mac)
Don't open your Cubase
Go to the control panel. open the sound control panel
Check the Midi Playback device, see if you can select the default driver to USB Device.
Then open the Windows Media Player. Open a Midifile and playbak.
See if the signal send to the USb Midi Out(should keep blinking)

it is really hard to troubleshoot when we are not touchin the system. ha..ha...

most of the time, these problem is caused by selecting the wrong mode. PLAY, SEQ, COMBI, SINGLE.

try to get one of them to work just to confirm that your cable is working! ha..ha..ha

no one suspect a faulty cable?

M-audio connected but now Midi Banks prob

hi, really sorry for the late reply, as i've been seriously bogged down with various things lately. anyways, i finally bought the M-audio interface, works like magic. problem now is, though my triton is in sync with the cubase, i keep getting stuck in the General Midi banks! Is there a systematic step for me to take to ensure my triton is communicating with the cubase correctly?

my device set-up is set to
in:USB midi 1x1
out:USB midi 1x1

under device manager I've selected all 3 triton devices in the drop-down list

each of my midi channels
in:USB midi 1x1
out: triton

so what else could i be possibly missing out on..?

Easiest answer to this is to download and load the Triton Patch in your Cubase. You should then be able to easily access all the sounds. You can also access your sounds without that - but then quite troublesome since you have to type in all the patch names yourself.

One download link for Cubase patches is this:

http://www.obscure.org/~riveted/patchscripts.html

Happy trying!

..?

You have to select the appropriate bank from your sequencer using midi bank select.

regarding the patch downloading..i went to the link and downloaded a whole bunch of sound names in a text form..what do i do with that?

under midi bank select, i've been choosing the banks on the cubase but my triton banks doesnt correspond.

perhaps to better phrase my question: is there a patch midi channelling i can set on the cubase? i strongly suspect my channels are not set right somewhere

They gave you the instructions if you follow the link on their page.

Here it is anyway:

http://www.obscure.org/~riveted/cubasesx.html

If that doesn't work, then I think you should find another download link. Otherwise it will be wihat lowjk said. Since I don't use Cubase, I cannot give you step by step instructions. But you should be able to select different midi banks.

Check out this forum for the discussions on this matter:

It will be good if you can do a google search first - answers are there. Of course, we are happy to help you google, but your problems can be solved quicker if you do it yourself - answers already exist somewhere.
