Keyboard and Guitar

Naw...using fake books and lead sheets. Not playing melody most of the time.

Yep....maybe I shld try to do more fill ins. Not sure how to work the Korg that my church has though.....so, can't do the split/layering with diff voices....

Eerrrhhh....well, more like dunno how to do that also.

yeah, that's the way to go. don't ever use the scoresheet. just use the songbook and some imagination. my keyboardist (ahem) plays from the scoresheet and hits all the bass notes and rythm chords as well. very punishing to the bassist and guitarist. haha..

guitar and piano sound are pretty much in the same range. it's easy to clash. my keyboard player occasionally uses voice (the ooh.. ahh.. kinda sound) and synth. my church p&w involves 2 keyboardist. one experienced and another novice. the experienced one plays the main rythm, fills and soloing, while the second provides the ambience using voice and synth stuff. the long sustain of voice actually mask errors.

since your guitarist is very seasoned, let him take the lead, and you provide the background.

my church got a korg too. i'm not sure which model, but it's got one hell of a monster sound.

pf, don't go either extreme. The church pianist/keyboardist SHOULD be able to play both as a team (in a band) and solo. I've seen keyboardists/pianists that fall in either extreme - can only do one but not the other. A church pianist should be more versatile than that. So while you are learning to play as a band, don't ever forget to do your usual sight-reading (very handy in times when there's a sudden change in the program and you need to play a hymn - happens to me quite often).

Forget about layering this stage. Just start slow. Learn to play together and to listen to the others rather than just yourself.

Hey Cheez, didn't see u posting these couple of days. Thot u went missing.

wahhh....I cannot take the "change in program" leh....

There's another pianist that plays by ear. She doesn't need to see anything. Probably due to her many years of experience of playing ba....

Must learn how to play by ear?

Didn't post - had to be out of the country for a few days.

Playing by ear...much preferred. Don't be too concerned. Step by step.

Hey guys!!!!

Success!!!

I managed to play the answering phrases last sunday!!! wooohooo....lol.....

Actually it happened when I accidentally missed 2 beats during the first worship song. Then I kept being "delayed" throughout. Wasn't planning for it. But I thought it sounded nice. ;)

Play more when the vocalists are NOT singing - that is, use "answering phrases". Songs usually don't require singers to sing non-stop. They sing a phrase, rest for a few beats, then the next phrase comes in. Play during the rests by answering the first phrase being sung (ie answering phrases).
