I guess a tremolo is out of the question for him. Usually, good guitars (even low-ends) are at least $300-400, so my suggestion would be the same as many here. Save up if you want brand new. Second hand for below $300, very easy! Look in the buy/sell sections.
Generally for hard rocking stuff I'd say Les Paul... At this price range, tremolo-equipped guitars can be your worst nightmares. If you want tremolo, don't go low-end.
