hey guysss

could some kind soul recommend me some jazz music to listen to?
i prefer those often featured on 98.3(i think). i usually hear them on the car on the way out, and have never heard any mention of the names. i take a short journey.

thanks a millions. :D

jazz is split into quite a number of genres no? Depends on what you like to hear.

Sorry but i'm not familiar with the kind of songs 98.3 plays, but i'll just share what i know.

Personally, i lean towards the fusion kind. Bands like, The Mike Stern Band, The Dave Weckl Band.

Also, you've got Larry Coryell and Kazumi watanabe, both guitarist, both pretty good imo. Then you've got Sadao Watanabe, Saxophonist, among many others in the field.

If you're into big band types, then there's The Count Basie Orchestra.

For 'oldies', you can check out Miles Davis, The Brecker brothers, John Coltrane etc.

Yup...you could always go down to places like HMW and stuff and look at their jazz collections and sample them to gain more knowledge of who's who and who plays what...

Did you know Jamaroquai is actually in the jazz genre? Acid Jazz that is so just as earlier mention jazz is diverse as it is. There's even Blues Jazz, a fav of mine.

I think you talking about 93.8 FM that plays jazz as interlude, easy listening stuff.

Good place to start is the VOCAL JAZZ compilation kinda stuff
- Good CD compilations are available freely in record stores
- Best Female Jazz Voices Volume 1 to 100 / Best Male Jazz Voices/ etc

For instrumentals,
- Try Joe Pass/ Martin Taylor (Solo Blues Jazz Guitar)
- Try George Benson (Smooth Guitar in band situation - his older stuff like Breezin')
- Try Sadao Watanabe (Sax)
- Try Jap stuff (Casiopea)

Dun venture into BLUE NOTE labels like John Coltrane/ Miles Davis/ Dizzie Gillespie/ Wayne Shorter, etc. They really are for real jazz freaks

wah dun like that laaaa...lol, but i'll have to agree that the above is an acquire taste.

But if you're a musician, you listen to the above, you can get some really cool and neat ideas...that's if can sort out what you're hearing though..lol.

chick corea, mccoy tyner, thelonious monk, bill evans, john coltrane, stan getz, miles davis, joe henderson, jaco pastorious and weather report, etc.
The first stuff i heard in jazz was monk, jaco and weather report,
Might find it hard to hear at first, but as time goes, you'll be rewarded with something really rich,
And oh not forgetting big band stuff like count basie, duke ellington, artie shaw, chick webb n all,
Amazing how such rich harmony was once very popular !!

What I said abt BLUE NOTE stuff is in context lah, dey...
If you want to get into Jazz in a big way (like I did in my earlier days), especially since you hang around S.O.F.T., then you're prob at least a hobbyist musician ---> I totally agree that you'll need to learn to appreciate THELONIUS MONK, MILES DAVIS, WAYNE SHORTER, JOHN COLTRANE at some stage as part of the education process.

Start with any jazz record you like. Decide which players on the recording you like best then find other records those guys play on. Then from those other records find other players you like and so on.

If you start with a Charlie Parker record, he recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, who recorded with John Coltrane, who recorded with Miles Davis, who player with Billy Cobham, who played with Larry Coryell, who recorded with John McLaughlin, who played with Jan Hammer, who recorded with Jeff Beck, who played with Jennifer Batten, who played with Michael Jackson....it's all connected.

heyy. thanks for all the input guys.
after listening to the mentioned bands/artistes i really enjoyed the vocal jazz.
its real soothing. :D

will continue to check out the rest.
and widdly thats alotttt of connections! =x

Check out a jazz band from Japan called SOIL & "PIMP". They are bloody awesome and fun to listen to.

Also, if you like piano, checkout Brad Mehldau too.
