jazz drumming?

how can you learn to play jazz? i mean, it's one thing finding a good teacher (who?), and another finding a dedicated jazz band who will accept a player just starting on jazz... it's not like jazz is something that can be learnt that easily by listening to cds or anything.
so... for those jazz players out there - how did you do it?

I'll try to help my fellow drummer. actually I am learning jazz too. Jazz are played in triplet...So you could count (anyhow as long there's three) :
One Two Three, Two Two Three, Three Two Three, Four Two Three
and play on the ride as (1 means you play,0 means zero la, no need to play):
1 0 0, 1 0 1, 1 0 0, 1 0 1,
Then play the hihat with your left leg (you know what I mean) (right handed setup) on 2 and 4 e.g:
0 0 0, 1 0 0, 0 0 0, 1 0 0
after you master this rudiment. then you can tap the snare and the bass drum in any rudiments you want to. The basic is to stick to that basic ride and hi-hat pattern. give it a try. And another tip. You must paly Ride as the loudest instrument followed by hi-hat, snare and lastly bass drum. it's different that ROCK. Practice
Cheers

hey u try to to get some books for beginners jazz drumming, i think swee lee bras brasah got sell, think ive saw it before sometime back. It teaches u basic grooves and some fills, complimented with a cd
To learn further than that i guess hiring a teacher would be better.
:D

i guess one big point i would be looking for would be experiences eg. how you got into jazz, the jazz scene, your band etc, how you learnt jazz.

the jazz teacher part would be quite nice as well!
and for southbridge, what time does the band start playing? do you need to buy a drink or can you just go and watch?

THANKS!

i think most of the Jazzer's got their start from Thomson Big Band or NUS Jazz Band...

I think the best teacher of jazz.. is a lot of playing and jamming around!

Go around to places like Blue Note or something and ask to jam with the band. and yes, most clubs would expect you to at least buy a drink la..

Most jazz is NOT played in triplets. The most fundamental part about jazz is the "swing" element, which is basically emphasis on counts 2 and 4 as opposed to pop/rock, which emphasises 1 and 3. :?

I started learning how to play jazz by reading up about jazz and learning from John Riley's books. Also, I listen to alot of jazz records, especially Oscar Peterson Trio. Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen was swinging their ass off, and Oscar Peterson was just magical! I play to their recordings alot (wished I have the chance now) to learn how to swing.

I took every chance to see good jazz musicians play, and learn from them. I also drop by Blue Note to just jam with the musicians to learn how to play the music with others. I have not done it for very long time though.

I'm also working together with a few guys in a jazz context. It's a good thing that one of us plays in Thomson Big Band.

I think I'll need to disagree with you on "jazz is not played in triplets". The jazz ride pattern is based on triplets, it is also called the jazz triplets. You don't play 123, 223,323,423, per se, but the ride pattern is based on the triplets, and the feel is in triplets.

Just listen to Take Five by Dave Brubeck, and it just leads you to count in 3s.

I guess what he means is that jazz isn't ALWAYS in triplets... it can be 16th notes rather than swung in triplet feel, or if it's really fast, it becomes straight...

Ok, I agree on that.

aiyahhhh just come to the exchanges and show us wat u all mean. well i mean there's couple of ways to write it i guess. writing it straight then adding the "notes are to be swung" at the top or just writing it in triplet form. (which to be is abit harder to read)
thats an interesting point on ur so fast that its straight thingy, since i play jazz like an old man i won't really know wat ur talking abt till later. bebop were u that dude at the exchange that hopped on and showed me comping? i'm the irritating guy with the tall hair

Hello Joshie...

Here are some ideas (Secret bag of tricks) I use play in Jazz music very often... Example 1 and 2 are more of Swing Era Jazz, for 3 and 4, more of Modern Jazz Fusion....

Note: t = Triplets (Ta) It goes like 1 t t 2 t t 3 t t 4 t t in a 4/4 time

Caps = Accent... For snare's uncapped, = Ghost notes... > = Accent beat

Example 1: 1 1/2 bar of rhythm and 2 beats fill (Sounds old school)

Ride |X-----X---x-X------X---x-|X-----X-----------------:||
Tom |---------------------------|-----------------O------:||
Snare |----o-O-------------------|----------x-X-X---X----:||
Bass Drum|O-----------------O-------|----o-----------------o-:||
HH Feet |------X-------------X------|------X-----------X-----:||
Sticking L R R L R
1 t 2 t 3 t 4 t 1 t 2 t 3 t t 4 t

Example 2: 1 bar rhythm, and another bar of fill with crescendo (Good way to build up passage...)

>
Crash |---------------------------|-------------X----------:||
Ride |X-----X---x-X-----X---x-|X-----X---x-------------:||
Snare |----o------------o-O-----|--o-o---o-o-O----------:||
Bass D |O-----------------------o-|o-----o---------------o-:||
HH Feet |-------X-----------X------|------X-------------X----:||
Crescendo
1 t 2 t 3 t 4 t 1 t t 2 t t 3 4 t

Example 3: Sixtuplets fill used widely by Steve Smith (Paradidledidle + Double Paradidle)

> > > > > >
H Tom |O---------------------------------------------------||
M Tom |--------------O-------------------------------------||
F Tom |----------------------------O-------o-o------------||
Snare |--o-o-o-o-o---o-o-o-o-o---o-o-o-----O---------||
HH Feet|X-----X------X------X------X-----X-----X-----X---||
Sticking RL R R L L R L R R L L R L R L R R L
1 2 3 4 5 6 2 2 3 4 5 6 3 2 3 4 5 6 4 +

Example 4: Double Bass Fill... Very "Tricky" Fill, RAISE YOUR LEFT HAND AND SHOW OFF THAT YOU CAN ROLL via ONE HAND!(Widely use by Steve Smith too!)

> > >
Crash |-------------------------------------------X---------||
H Tom |-------O----------------------------------------------||
M Tom |--------------O------------O-------------------------||
F Tom |----------------------------------O------------------||
Snare |O-------------------O-------------------O----O--O-||
Bass D |--o-o---o-o---o-o---o-o---o-o---o-o--------------||

haha sorry to bring this up but i need help on some ideas for a jazz fill-in.

You'll need to buy alot of different jazz cds and listen! You can also get some books if you can read....check out syncopation for the modern drummer by ted reed.....in the newer prints....check out page 38....read the quavers as swung 8th notes and practice them around the kit....there are tons of things you can practice with just that page alone...

Or you can seek a professional drum instructor and he'll be able to help you better....

Best of Luck!

jersper: thanks a lot man! for the great effort. i'll try to decode it. hahaha.

alvin: hm.. im not looking for books or cds. im just looking for ideas you guys might have on fill ins. mostly not a whole bar fill in. just a side fill to complete the beat.
