Jamming Studio - soon to open

Hi all, just found this website and I must say it is good to see a lot of music aficionados here! I just want to share to everyone that me and my brother is setting up a new jam studio. Me, my brother and a number of friends are regular jammers on jam studios here.

It may not make any business sense but we will only have 1 jam studio. Because I want some sofas inside it as we will be using it too - a studio made by jammers for jammers.

We will be opening this up for rent for the rest of you there looking for a good jam session. It will be located at a 2nd floor Shophouse along Keong Saik Road (behind Outram Park MRT - 5 minutes walk).

I am buying the equipments soon - so let me know if you jammers there have any requests on equipments. I am looking at Tama drums, Marshall Amps & Cabinets, Korg Keys, etc - Any inputs on how we can get the best experience for you and me - would be appreciated.

Glad to hear a New studio opening in the outram area! I'm a drummer and i would like to inquire about the rates for jamming. also, is there any rental for Drums-only as i would like somewhere new home where i can practice.

Cheers!

@DeathCubeK - sure PM me the selling prices - I've been looking around as well - mostly on Peninsula Shopping Complex - there is a Marshall distributor there

@slashworm - we haven't finalise the rates yet. But we will be reasonably aggresive in the first few months to entice people to see the studio - so I hope you will drop by when we open. I may setup a practice booth as well for solo practice sessions. I will provide more details as I get them. thanks for the interest.

For drums-wise I highly recommend Gretsch over Tama. In the same price range, Gretsch sound just way better than the Tamas.
I suggest you can take a leaf out of Shin's studio decision to invest in their Gretsch Catalina Maples. You get a 6-pc set at about 500-600 US.

If you need recommendations and good lobang for drums, you can contact me or add me at jingming_86@hotmail.com
I see if I can get you best deal for your new-start up studio, at least for drums.

Do Marshalls cost as much as Vox? IMO, Vox is THE amp - better tones, warmer, phatter... Marshall has lost its touch over the years. As long as no Line 6 (hee hee).

Unfortunately for jam studio owners, tone is subjective for everyone. There will always be people who don't like something in the studio, no matter what gear you get, no matter how much that gear cost. Also, this means that there will be potentially 100s of suggestions here, and most of which are probably not economically viable (no offence to the posters). Hence, my suggestion would be to get something that is within your startup budget and that is easily maintainable, and something that most people like. (Marshall SS amps are pretty much ok in these 2 aspects, despite what some tone purists think) However, i do agree with the point of getting a good PA system and mics, these things are not as subjective as tone. I hate places where the mic jacks cannot connect with the XLR jack, the PA always turns off by itself, etc. Good cables IMHO are ESPECIALLY important. Or let me rephrase: cables in good condition. For me its ok if the cables i use in the studio are from Kabletek or some other cheaper brand but they MUST be in good working condition. Hence, this is a longer term goal: once a cable has been reported to be faulty, change it immediately, and throw it into the dustbin. I understand that customers may not want to report faulty items, especially since they might be blamed for spoiling it (sometimes because they did spoil it) hence the onus is on you to check the gear regularly, if not frequently.

So, my recommendation for an amp (i know nothing about PA):

Sound Drive SG100R Head and cab
Marshall MG100DFX head and cab
Line 6 Spider IV 150 head and cab

Btw i suggested using heads and cabs so that if customers want to bring their own heads along, they can be used, as combos do not offer that capability.

Or, be the first studio in Singapore to use multi-efx! Haha

@loldude - thanks for the info - i will make sure PA system and mic is good then. would a Yamaha stagepass + Shure 58 work?

Yea, the Shure SM58 is a very durable and user-friendly microphone but I would also suggest AKG D5 or their other models as well as the Audio-Technica PRO or Midnight Blues range. beyerdynamic may be good choices too. They should cost around the same as an SM58 but may offer more value.

hey jbarks - yeah i will be looking at it and make sure bassists won't short changed - i was just wonderin, if the room have 2 4x12 for guitar amps - is it necessary to have a 4x12 for bass as well? is it ok to go for a 4x10 Marshall? if i do, would it be considered good, average or bad? or should i go for SWR or Markbass? let me know. I also want to make it good as I will be using it myself.

actually if you do it like Fourtones, everything will be fine.

true, they don't have "OMGZXXZZX TOOBZ AMPLIFIUERZZZZ" but everything functions properly and sounds ok. :)

I would suggest this for each room, the standard with most jamming studios:

2 x 150 Watt solid state heads
2 x 412 guitar cabs
1 x 200-400 watt bass amp head
1 x 410 or 810 bass cab
A drumset
A keyboard amp for vocals
(no need PA)

THEN, offer the TOOOBz AMPLIFIUERZ for rent. I don't know, maybe 10 dollars per hour in-house? I can assure you alot of musicians would appreciate that. JCM 800, JTM 45, Deluxe Reverb, Twin Reverb, Bassman, Tweed 5E3. Offer them all at $10 per hour in-house.

I think a lot of people would flock there!

Hey, i'd like to give some feedback:

1. You might want to put the extra $5/$1.50 for the extra band members/guests under the rates section
2. To be perfectly honest, i don't like the extra charges, as i feel that it would be much more attractive to bigger bands (like mine) if the rates were flat. I know i would go to your studio often if i didn't have to pay an extra $10 per hour (my band has 7 members)
3. You might want to upload photos of the finished studio ASAP
4. The amps and gear you have look good enough, but IMHO the price is a little high.

No offence meant, i'm comparing your studio to my regular studio (Backbeat) but the comparison won't be fair without photos to gauge how the new studio looks like. Hope i helped, all the best for your opening!

I agree with what loldude333 have said

It's a lil pricey compared with kickass studio like backbeats.
