is it possible to self teach how to play the guitar?

i have self-learned for about 2 or 3 years, and i am safely able to say i am a decent guitarist and songwriter/arranger. But as of now I am at a 'saturation' point and I don't feel I am learning anything new anymore...

maybe I should find a teacher too! haha but i think self-learn is a good start, and of course passion is important. Don't listen to people who say 'you kind of suck, don't even try that song cause it's beyond you'

my first song on the electric was 'weekend' from X japan and on the acoustic it was "forever love", then "voiceless screaming". And learning those songs, while it took me forever to grasp, let me improve by a lot. So i think self-learning is pretty savvy

hey bro, i think you should get yourself a teacher, or at least sit down with one and he/she can go through with you on what aspects of your playing you can improve on. it's very useful, i've personally benefitted greatly from doing that. :D

the bad part about learning from friends. is that sometimes they teach you to become like them instead of teaching you

gee. dont really know how to phrase it but hope you get my vibe

If u ve played piano before, u would probably know the basic theory at least behind music. Flats sharps majors minors...

And i dunno if im wrong but i kinda think people with early piano training tend to grow a much better musical ear than average people so if u are tone sensitive, that would be a huge plus. add in the passion and i bet u ll self teach urself and become good really fast.

Everyone can learn to play by themselves. If you are capable of finding your own mistakes, and create exercises to improve, it's just good. However, if you have friends whom you can play with, it'll help dramatically. If you know a teacher who can teach you the things you want, it's really helpful. Guitar is supposed to be fun, so there is no reason having a teacher that teach you things you don't really want to know. :p
The thing is that you can't consider the teacher your only learning. Have the teacher as an addition to your learning. You know, don't just do the things you are told. :p

If you just play alone (like I have for a few years) you come to a point where you don't know what to do (like i have ). I barely know any theory, and I don't know what I should do to improve myself technically.

What I mean to say, is that having a teacher won't immediately make you a great guitarist, and not having one won't make you not become one. A teacher can however help you getting through these points where you're not able to improve by yourself. I guess everyone reach that point sometimes.

As you probably know all the basic theory stuff, you got a good foundation for learning any instrument on your own, but a teacher can't make anything worse, so it's worth a shot. ;) Also, as a few others has said: if you learn by yourself, you might "grow" some mistakes that can get really troublesome later on, and can take a long time trying to get off.

i would share my story , a friend of mine teach me how to press the strings and teach me a to g , i learn strumming , plucking by myself by watching how people do it and move on to electric and learn tapping , screaming and stuff by myself . now i am a teacher of 5 students ;)

bottom line is , have the passion and you will do it. :-D

One thing....whether self-taught or with a teacher....is yourself....

How passion you are...how hard you work......how often u practise...

guitar is a musical instrument, not a toy.....results don't come easy....required lotsa patience and time,

You can have a teacher and nothing comes out of you or the other way round.....

so bottom line is...you have to know yourself....

I learnt guitar all by myself. With will and determination and an open mind, and the occasional help book, anyone can do it.

RoRK is also self-taught - just too bloody stubborn to have the patience to learn from someone else. Weird but true!

Yes you can do it but donch do like RoRK.

For awhile I was self-taught, but no progress :(
If you're like me and completely clueless to where to start, how to continue and what to do, get a teacher lol I've improved quite a bit within the few months with a teacher compared to the 2 years without. But then again, you do need some passion and determination also to keep you going at it continously.

read somewhere that guitar is easy to play but hard to master while piano is hard to play but easy to master. hope that answer ur question

yes, self teach is possible. But with a good teacher, one can learn faster. Besided, having a teacher will force you to learn harder :D

Well, actually. It really depends on the guitarist itself,if a person does not want to learn much,he/she does not put in effort even though he/she has a great teacher,it is just a waste of time.

I would rather say,passion. =D

Learn from Youtube videos. =p kiddin'

If a professional guitar teacher is not an option, then go with friends who play guitars... they can give some pointers.

I remember when i just started out...
Stole my uncle's guitar chord book, learn the chord shapes, hang out with some fellas who are already playing well, they forced me to make up my own solos to whatever chords they were playing to... and importantly self-practice x10000...
I'm one of those 'under-the-block' and self-trained guitarist, so to speak.

I'm ashamed that I can't read 'taugehs' since i started guitars 10 years ago, but I feel that what I learned from peers is just as valuable.

"Self Taught" hmmm....ever wondered if this means that you don't refer to any books or anyone and alakazam you start to know all the chords and stuff to play a tune.

Come on guys! There is really no such thing as "Self Taught" if you look hard at it. I think it feels good to boast that we did not have to call on a proper teacher.

The moment you refer to a book or a scatch from someone you are in some way learning from that person; though he/she does not personally teach you. You start to learn from trial and error but not self taught. I call it taught by acquisition...hahahaha Why you think copy rights came about.

Learning on by yourself has pro and cons. The biggest problem is you develop bad habits which in later years will be difficult to correct. Good to start for a while and when one gets going especially when can manage fundamental chords then go for proper teacher.

Learn from Youtube videos. =p kiddin'

yo brother serna, can la..
i learn some stuff from you tube vids one..

you can learn from sources like youtube, practise playing songs with tabs on ultimate-guitar, the key is hard work =))
then again, if you find it hard to do that, by all means get a teacher..
i think we got alot of pros in soft xDD

Agree with Diehard, the bad habits will be hard to correct...

Anyway, the debate can go on whether it's best to learn by teacher, books, friends, videos etc etc etc...
It's just to each individual i suppose.

Like there's no right or wrong to eat noodles with either fork or chopsticks.
