Is having a band leader necessary?

a leader can only do so much.
the rest of the band mates need to be team players if not, its all not gonna work either.

dammit it, i sound like some motivational speaker. "team player" wth.
but i mean it. :/

everyone has different expectations of how a group shd be, and every group has different dynamics mah. so its hard to say whether a leader is suitable depends on many factors like managing egos, expectations, motivation etc.

that said, i think if u have a band manager to take care of negotiation and logistics, while there's a music director to take care of the music, it should be all good.

having a "band leader" is not necessary.
but having a band who willing to work together is important.
a band should work together and not critisise one another regardless of talent and ability.
the band must be understanding with one another's problems faced throughout.
the band should make decisions together as one when it comes to gigs or labels,etc..

having a band leader will conflict more problems in the band.decisions may be made without the bands knowledge thus an argument may arise.
a band should have regular discussions regarding plans for the future and where the band wants to go.

well this is what im planning to do with my band.

i feel having a leader is reli not necessary...
yes some say its a must coz sum1 nid to book studio, nid to plan, nid to tis n tat...

for my band...
its an open thinghy.
every1 in my band have a say to everytink. even if there's a dispute, we settled it out like a band. and things can always work out wen we talk.
discipline issues. if we r not happy wif sumtink, we voiced it out. we have tis understanding in our head tat we have to listen to each other, take in feedbacks and discuss.
on stage, in studio, if 1 or 2 is like slacking, drifting away... the 'sane' 1 will shout nicely.
we r used to it. it's like an automatic thing. we r committed as a band and we love each other.

ask yourself this-

is a soccer captain really necessary? it's quite the same for a band.

at the end of the day, it's a team effort and everybody needs to work together.
But a good, firm hand of a leader gets rid of indecisiveness and sloppiness, and keeps things running smooth.
You will get more things done, get them done better and move along quicker.

one of the best post yet ! up ur points

^^^ i agree...

but for my case, it seems the opposite. any1 of us can 'take charge' at any random moments.

i tried playing wif a band wif a leader nominated by the band. it sucks. seriously sucking deep. the 'leader' chooses and decides everything and the members do not have a say at anitink.tis ego-ness of a leader maybe... lol

but i believe tat every1 are not like wat i mentioned...
to me there are more happening people than stupid ones. :)

rock on!!!

I believe it is no exaggeration to say that every major successful band had some sort of leader figure or figures.

It doesn't have to be one person alone, and it doesn't always have to be the same person, but somebody's got to take charge and take initiative in any sort of team effort, or you'll never reach your maximum potential.

A leader will take charge automatically. There will be no need to voice out his position, nor will there be any opposition to his silent domination.

Band leader is necessary

I totally agree. A band leader need not be a post that's MENTIONED. But everyone in the band will automatically know who the leader is because he/she is usually the one most passionate abt the band.

He/she is usually the one that handles conflicts within the band, sets the direction, PRs and tries to get gigs for the band. The 'band leader' needs to have an idea of what the band is heading for.

And usually, (not all the time), the one who is the natural leader will not face any opposition. And if he/she does, a good 'leader' will always know how to handle it and believe in the decisions made for the band.

its not necessary to have a leader.

but there is for sure a guy who always arranges the jamming session, books the studio and smses everyone about it and makes sure everyone is there on time by constantly smsing everyone and stuff

That i agree

Not just any leader, a GOOD leader. Appointing a leader is easy, appointing a good one with EQ and Organiszation/management skills is difficult.. everybody in the band have egos, and choosing songs to play for an event can be a bitch, but sometimes you just gotta put your trust and faith in them, bite your tongue n hope for the best...And trust me , when you are dealing with conivving event agents or cut-throat clients, you will need a strong voice to deal with them.

my take on this

having a leader in a band is a must-what bro FGL has said is correct
a leader need not be a dictator although too much power could corrupts...
eh..sorry..this a bit politics here...hehehe

back to business,a leader must know how to delegate the others of each and his/her own responsibility and recognise each strength and weakness..hardly we could find 5 bandmates are on the same wavelength/frequency..so Bro boon, you gotta good chemistry there

nevertheless there are a few bands without a recognised leader..for example, The Eagles..each of the members are accomplished musicians in their own right..
but there are also bands with a dominant personality, i.e. Megadeth..

i would take on the role of band leader if only i'm paid $3.2 mil a year..opps politics again..

most bands do it for fun , not for the money la . its hard to make it big in singapore . Enjoy the music , enjoy the company it brings you . i feel that politics and dictatorship should be out of something we do for fun .

band leader must call everyone, book jam studio, find gigs. he must liase and give his contact details to dodgy promoters and scammers. he must pay first for miscellaneous expenses in case other band members have no cash/there is no atm nearby. he also must settle all the egos of the band members. he must possess class3 driving licence so that whenever necessary, he is be able to provide transportation for band members and their gear. he must also 'lead by example' when there is no roadie (which is all the time) and carrying heavy equipment is involved
