Is Gibson SG Standard versatile enuf for any kind of music?

To me, it's a digital guitar. It does alot of things, just like Spider II, Vetta, Flextone III etc.. But ultimately, only a Les Paul does the Les Paul thingy, a Strat does the Strat thingy, and a Martin a Martin thingy.

The variax does indeed allow a great of versatility, but not everyone wants that versatility. I'll take my Nitefly anyday over the Variax, at least it's organic sounding.

I did try the Variax at City Music. But sadly, I was not impressed by it. The feel is not the same as playing a real Les Paul or Strat. And the Variax does not come cheap too. Around $1,000 plus onwards.

I also find the switching around on the knobs a bit cumbersome as you have to remember the right sequence for the type of guitar you want. Or refer to the booklet. I suppose one can get used to the switching after a while but if I'm only playing a Les Paul or Strat most of the time on the Variax, it would defeat the purpose of getting the Variaix in the first place.

Like most modelling equipment, it is useful for recording, or when you need one instrument for multiple usage or for travelling , or simply to impress friends/people.

BTW, the Variaix can also play acoustic instruments.

If I recall correctly, Variax uses a computer chip. And computer chip does hang.

But you do sound like u are joking anyway.......

If you read reviews on Line 6 amps, they use computer chips, and they do hang. So the inverse might be true for variax.. 8)

The Variax impressed me the other time i heard it used in church. I was doing sound and one of the musicians used one. i heard most of the tones from Les paul to Tele To Strat. The sound is too close for comfort. That's as good as it goes. But weirdly, after using that guitar once, my church's guitarist has not used it since in church. he has stuck to his Washburn ever since.

i don't really need it...i want my guitars fitted with pickups dat i have faith in :p i don't really think dat Variax can deliver the sound that i want for my band. Ask urself do u realli need Variax? Don't be blinded that all-in-one does not mean all TONE-in-one..Some might NEED it and some might not. Most of us guitarists know dat TONE not only comes from type of amp, type of guitar or pickup type... It comes from a combination of different elements...Joe Satriani believes good tone comes from your fingers..I AGREE wif him..and its not only dat..other than playing style and technique, there are many more such as amp type, type speakers including number and type drivers and cabinet style, physical positioning of speaker, valve types and their adjustments, if u r into playing live one thing to consider is microphone placement, strings gauge, type of pickups and its wiring to tone, picks gauge, cable type used, tune-up of guitar, adjustment and positions of effects and adjustment of amp controls and like somebody said earlier its the condition of your equipment and in some cases the type guitar amp microphones used..and lastly the most important thing that contributes to good tone is SPEAKER..Changing the type speaker has as big effect on tone as changing the amp or pickup. U can change the speaker in ur amp if u r serious in getting ur kind of tone..try to get to know some audio freaks out there..modify ur amp..there are many speakers available by Celestion(Marshall make use alot of this speakers), Fane, McKenzie etc..this is how bands that u always listen to get their signature sound with a little help from guitar tech and audio eng..Variax offers all the good tone of good guitars but is it ur kind of tone?..not mine..

Coz i am in US now...
dunno whether to buy it in US or in s'pore.
If the price difference between S'pore and US is not large, then i would prefer to buy it in S'pore.
the price of the SG 61'reissue in US is USD$1649.
