Intending to get gear this holidays!

Hi,everyone.I'm starting this thread to find out more about guitar gear & stuff like that, mainly because I want to get myself some gear and start learning the electric guitar this holidays - most probably around December or end of November.I'm hoping you guys can help me out with what gear to get and I'm planning to keep everything under a budget of maybe $1000?
I intend to get myself gear that will produce a wide variety of sound,so I can play around with them until I can find certain sounds I like.
My main influences on picking up the guitar are rock bands, for example,Green Day,My Chemical Romance,Muse,Simple Plan,The All-American Rejects,Boys Like Girls, etc. So I hope to be able to sound something like them with my gear.
I've been getting advice my from friends about what kind of things I need to buy and also surfed other forums to find out more, and so far, this appears to be the list of things which I'll need:
-Electric Guitar [I've been recommended to get a guitar with humbucker pickups as they supposedly sound more "rock" than single-coil]
-Amplifier
-Multi Effects Pedal [My friends advised me to get this so I can cover a wide range of sounds and it's supposed to be cheaper alternatives to single-effect pedals]
-Cable [I've been told cables will directly affect the sound that comes out,so I need a good line of cable that I can trust!]
-Pick[Do these actually matter?]
-Tuner[I want to see if I can get a convinient electronic tuner]
Oh yes,by the way,I can only practise my music at home, and I live in a neighbourhood estate,so I don't want my sound to be too loud for my neighbours. However,I need amps that can still perform well when I play for my friends' band.
Thank You for your time and patience,
Merick.:)

imho, get the best guitar within ur price range and get a small amp.just bear with it awhile and take time to save for A)stompboxes B)multi-efx pdl.For multi-efx i can recommend pod x3 live as it serves almost all i need imo.well there is a big competitor of it,the Boss GT10.For guitar wise let others recommend u =)

Yeah thats true, but different tuners have different accuracies, those in mfx's are not as accurate as like korg's DT-10 or pitchblack. But still useable

Hi Merick.
I would recommend that you get an Ibanez gio. I started off a little while back and was lucky enough to get one. It's a pretty decent guitar to start off with.
Bring an experienced friend to check the guitar with you (action, neck, etc.)

You could opt for an amp with built-in effects and modelling such as a Vox VT30, which I currently use. It sounds really great, but I'm not sure if it will suit your taste. Alternatively, you could get an amp separately and buy a Vox Tonelab ST. Citymusic is the distributor here.

Cables aren't that much of an issue, although the cheapo one i got with my guitar gave in a couple of months later. I've been using my Ibanez cable since. Got it for free with my guitar though.

As for picks, I personally like Tortex 1.14s. It's more of personal preference, I feel, although softer picks would logically hit the string with less force, affecting the tone.

Tuners aren't a big issue either, and any old one should do its job.

Hope this helps, and if I made a mistake somewhere, feel free to correct me. Good luck. :)

this is rather difficult; a domestic amp is rather limited in volume propulsion when used in a band context... especially when there are drums in the mix 8-)

I've tried the Roland Cube 30x in small venues before. Works pretty well =)

Use the power squeezer at home and it's perfect!

Hi Revelt,
this Ibanez Gio you mentioned...does the Gio line have a website?Because I read that it's a budget line by Ibanez like Squier is to Fender and Epiphone is to Gibson, but I can't seem to find the products(unlike Squier/Epiphone which have their own sites to view products from). Also, may I know how much you got your Gio for in $SGD(Just for price comparison's sake)?
By the way, thanks for mentioning the chromatic tuners in Multi Effects lemonade93,I nearly missed that out. However,I prefer to trust stand-alone tuners,as they are made to tune and would should be more reliable in doing their job of tuning.
As to joker36's advice,I'm thinking of getting off with a one-shot deal.A $1000or less budget for everything that I'll need to last me at least a few years. So I don't think I'll be saving up anymore for single-effect pedals, but rather just get a multi effects that offers more effects/unit and be done with it.
Also,I've read a review around here about the G2.1U by Zoom and the KORG AX3000G,and both seem to be affordable, trustworthy multi effects pedals.Any opinion on this, guys(Do these units offer things like delay,WAH,etc.)?

haha yeah, i'm looking at the Korg AX3000G, hopefully the deal goes well :), anyway.

For a guitar i would seriously reccomend the guitar I bought, hehe. DONT ASK WHY :)

i bought the Ibanez SA260FM.

Why i suggest this?
It's cause its cheap and good!.

List price when i bought it was SGD870

And FYI, Swee Lee christmas sales coming up so expect around... 40-50% off list price... sooooo.... :P

And its great cause its MUCH better than the Gio's.
And it's easy to restring unlike some Ibanez guitars with the Edge bridges.

Edge bridges are better but harder to maintain and unless you've been using floating bridges for quite some time, i wouldn't reccomend going straight into using the Edge bridges.

Thats where the Sat Pro II Bridge comes in, i have only ONE problem and its that if you abuse it too much, the strings would go out of tune and i've checked my guitar out and its not the nut :).

So just slap on some locking tuners and you're on your way :)

I wouldn't trust any low-end tremolo to stay in tune well. I have an Ibanez GSA60, and it was a great guitar except that it had a tendency to go a little out of tune even without using the whammy bar. I hardtailed the tremolo, which solved the problem completely. I used it at my recent performance.

If the TS wants a stable tremolo, then getting a mid-end guitar (at least) would be a good idea. The Ibanez SA260 would be good especially with the sales coming. The Ibanez SAs are very comfortable instruments, versatile in tone and looks, and in my humble opinion very underrated in Ibanez's arsenal. Just a warning... I heard bad things regarding construction from my friend about the Ibanez SA160 (he said it was definitely worse than my GSA60), so the SA260 would be recommended over it even if it costs more.

Yeah. I forgot totally about that series. Haha.

And I did the same thing with my gio which I forgot to mention too. Haha. Exactly the same experience. Wouldn't gig with it without screwing the bridge down.

i agree with you getting the Ibanez Gio. Great starter guitar, looks real good too. Umm for the amp i bought the Ibanez Tone Blaster when i first started. For its price i must say it sound real good and i play your genre too, alt rock and it really provides that kinda sound. and new toneblaster were just released, ToneBlaster X if im not wrong. tried it at sweelee, its really good for its price. you might wanna consider that. have fun :)

hey TS!i'm like you, starting electric guitar this holidays.i'm also mainly influenced by MUSE.check out my thread here, alot of recommendations:
http://soft.com.sg/forum/gear-guitar/151579-just-starting-out-muse-ic.html

btw guys,is this the Ibanez GIO model you guys are talking about?
http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-SA260FM
looks effin' cool!!!i wanna know if this guitar can be used to play MUSE sounds, with it's H-S-S set up.i've been recommended the Rally LP in my above mentioned thread and am considering replacing it with this baby if it suits my sound!!:mrgreen::mrgreen:

Hey thanks for the replies, guys.I've looked through mcuosver's thread,as well as done a fair bit of research.
Looks like I'm going for an Ibanez SA260FM(pretty sweet-lookin' guitar w versatility - H,S,S) and possibly a KORG AX3000G multi effects pedals(this unit seems to offer more effects than alot of other multi effects pedals at this price range, can anyone confirm this point for me?Again,it's versatility was what won me over).I'm thinking that since I'm a beginner, versatility is top priority so I can play around with different sounds with different pickups and effects. It will also give me freedom to recreate more of the different bands' sounds that I have listed as influences since some of them differ in sound by quite abit.
However,I am still looking for an AMP,that will serve well at bedroom-practice-level and still be able to perform well,in maybe a live environment.

PS:Anyone know how much the KORG AX3000G + Ibanez SA260FM should cost me in all?And where can I get the Ibanez?I could get a KORG at CITY MUSIC easily, though.

Thanks,
Merick:cool:

First of all, what kinda guitar shapes do you like?
do you like Billie Joe's Blue or his LesPaul Junior?
do you also like Frank Iero's pansy Elitist or Ray's Sunburst LesPauls

Define what style of guitar you would like :)

Get a modeling amp first, then explore your tones, because you musical taste will definately change over time, its wise to have that option for different tonal variations.
and a tuner. a strap, input jacks.

Haha.I very, very much prefer guitars that look like Matt Bellamy(MUSE)'s Manson guitars, which look something like a Tele, but not completely. So,the Ibanez SA260FM is the next best thing that I have come across so far, instead of normal Strat-like designs.
Hmm,any modeling amps to recommend?Maybe the Line 6 Spider IV Series??Not really sure about amps. But I know I need jacks to support my KORG unit.
