improving tone of a Marshall DSL 401?

so i bought a jcm2000 dsl 401 around 2 years+ ago (2008 model), and have been using it regularly since. i know it doesn't have a great rep for a marshall, and i've seen this first hand-- the distortion is REALLY fizzy until i start to reach break up volume (where it becomes alright), and the amp seems to be voiced with more treble than anyone would expect from an amp.

i'm not complaining, cuz i can deal with this by backing off the treble a lot, and playing it at volumes just short of the point where it might start to piss off the neighbours, but i still would've sold it if not for the fact that i'd be selling for much less than i got it for (doesn't seem to fetch much second hand, i've noticed). and its clean sound (which is surprisingly really nice).

since i'm gonna be keeping it, i wanna ask you guys what i can do to improve its tone as much as possible. i've already thought of swapping the stock tubes for JJ EL84's in the power section and EH ECC83's in the preamp, and swapping the speaker for a celestion V30, but what about all the complicated modding stuff (fooling with the resistors, etc.)? i'm not much of a hands-on guy, but pointing me in the right direction would be cool haha. i'm going to upgrade it gradually mod by mod, so i do plan to learn everything at some point.

and maybe if anyone has had some experience with this amp, tell me what they thought of it haha
