If you had 1k to start off and get a complete rig, what gear would you get?

first i'll start off looking at 2nd hand buys.

i'll aim for a decent epiphone and a tube amp, maybe a valve jr or blackheart. if i still have remains i'll get efxs.

get a epiphone les paul standard, epiphone valve jr, and korg ax1500. guitar and amp at swee lee sale of course!

Go completely 2nd hand, unless where you can't help but buy it new

1) A good quality cheap mid-range guitar, priced at up to 70% of retail after discount, preferably with aftermarket pickup. Even better if pickup installed is exactly what you want
1a) Aftermarket pickups of your choice
2) EQ Pedal
3) A TS-7 for boosting
4) Daisy chain + Onespot
5) A decent 10" speaker amp with good clean/dirty tone (I like my Toneblaster X 30R)
6) Guitar bag

An example of a cost breakdown:
1) Say about up to $560 (up to $400 with stock loadout)
1a) up to $160, ignore if you are fine with existing pickup on the concerned guitar
2) Danelectro Fish n chip EQ, max $60
3) Can probably get them around $50-$70
4) Say, $50
5) Say, $250
6) Say, $30. Ignore if not necessary.

Total: Max 1020. Well it exceeds 1K, but not by much.

Go 2nd hand. =)

If i'm starting off, just a decent guitar that suits the genre i play and a microcube/cube 30.

Save the rest of the money for a better guitar in future.

If I had no experience with gear at all,I'd buy a cheap 2nd hand USA/Japan made guitar(Highway one fender((got value mah)) and use the rest to buy a decent 2nd hand Multi effects board such as the ME-50 or something. After a few months, you'll know what you really need.

I'd spend $600 on a relatively good guitar (Like an MIJ Strat?), and $400 on a PODXTLive, then hook that thing up to my PC.

Use half of the money to fly to Japan and the other half to buy a Fender Japan

Lol! Dy you nonsense la! How to come back? Hehehe :D

Get a Fender Japan, and a decent tube amp. You won't need much pedals like that. Maybe you can get a distortion pedal for the really high gain stuff.

Cheers,
WWH

Hmmmmm.........Fender Japan usually costs in excess of $600 no? If u wanna get a tube amp that is versatile and gd, it will cost at least $600 no? But $600+$600 does not equal <$1000. I wld suggest using the money to get a decent entry to mid level guitar (Ibanez RG321MH, SA260FM, LTD EX50 to name a few). All shld be below $400, so 2nd hand is a gd option. Rest of money use to get either a reasonable solid-state and pedals or a gd tube amp.

If you have 1k, spend on drugs sex booze, easy way.
Or you're gonna spend it on gear, then ultimately with the gear, spend on drugs sex booze, so just skip the gear getting step.

Buy a Stagg tele, or a LTD EC-50, or a relatively well-priced Ibanez RG350.. Try to spend below $350 on the guitar..

Then, scout for a 2nd hand amp with 2x12" speakers, maybe a Vox AD50vt 212, Randall RG100SC, Laney LV300 Twin.. Spend maybe $600 on this..
If not, an Epiphone Valve Junior head, modded with Bitmo mod-kit.. Buy a Vox VA212N (I think) cab during the City Music sale.. If possible mod to Celestion Seventy 80s..

If I have excess money, scout for a second hand JH-2s Classic Fuzz (can't live without it)..:mrgreen:

guitar: 2nd hand jap fender standard or korean ephiphone dot around $550-600

effect: 2nd hand korg AX1500 around $120-$150 or zoom gfx-8 around$150-$200

Amp: 2nd hand orange, marshall 15-20watt with the remaining cash

im happy with my gear as it is.
so ill use that money to get a bike license..

and then work and top up the remaining cash to get a vespa or a gilllera..
(mainly scooter types)

haha.. you cant race with me! im too slow...

I spent 500 = Ibanez RG350DX (2nd Hand, with pick-ups changed), 400 = Epiphone Valve Jr. Combo (New, 400 is list, = 320), Beta Aivin HM-200 = 80+, rest on cables.

This way, you'll get a decent clean sounding tube amp, a fast playing versatile guitar, and a booster/distort pedal. If you want a drive, just drive the volume a little higher, it'll break into a nice tube overdrive, when needed just use the pedal to get the desired sound.

Train technique, instead of trying to achieve epic gear status.

I think I would just concentrate on getting a good amp first above all things if it's mainly for home usage, cos the amp will stay with you for a long time since u are on a budget or just starting out. Get a good solid state amplifier (wide range of solid state amps with built in effects around the $500 budget). For a guitar I would suggest any guitar in the range of $500 that suits your needs and the music you play.

I don't think gadgets or effects should be an option only once you've really settled down with what you have. I feel a good way to start will mainly be your guitar and amp. Whatever top notch gadget won't make it sound better if your amp and guitar don't satisfy you especially with a budget of $1k because the gadget will only sound as good as the amp you are using.

That's what I did when I started out with a budget of only $700 years back when things weren't so expensive. I got a really cheap Yamaha 2nd hand at $300 and a Crate 15watts at $350. It could produce fine cleans and enough distortion to satisfy my needs. Jam studios pretty much had amps with built in distortion so I endured till I could afford a good gadget.

Just my opinion based on my experience. :-D
