IEMs - In Ear Monitors

Hey hey, can anyone teach me about this IEM thing? ;)

I wonder whats the difference between IEM or earphone or that sort of things.

And i still dunno how it really works, like for example, from a mixer or phone, or ipod, or whatever i dunno haha.. then hows the deal with the noise? during band sessions or gigs, if i only listen to a metronome from that IEM, can I still hear the drums, guitars, etc?

thanks

In ears are just normal earphones basically, so it gives you the sound coming out from wherever it's plugged into. In gigs and such you'll be getting the feed from the mixer. If you feed the metronome into the mixer as well you can have all the other instruments and vocals and the metronome coming out of the ear phones. Normal earphones do this as well, it's just that in ears block out external noise and sound so that you only (or practically only) hear whatever is coming out from the earphones.

Excuse my poor use of sound terminology. Hope you get the basic idea.

oh okay, ya i got that one, but then again, im not sure if you know it but well, if i only uses metronome from either mixer or somewhere else through the IEM, can I still hear the drums, guitars, etc outside whats coming through the IEM? ( in this case the metronome )

well bro. depends on your IEM. as you see IEM works like a ear bud do.

the tighter the fit, outside air is blocked therefore causing sound waves unable to enter your ear.

so same principle. anyway. you could always plug 1 side of the IEM into your ear and the other ear is used to listen the drums and etc.

oh okay, thanks for the replies.
oh ya, one more thing :p.
do you use these things?
and if yes, what do you connect them to? hehehe
