Between speakers and cabs, I'm inclined to say cabs are more important. Badly designed cabs will kill the sound of great speakers.

how different can a cab be designed? it always come in rectangle shape, doesn't it? :lol:

Or square. But the dimensions (width, length, height) will definitely determine how much room for acoustics it has inside.

A gentleman here did a speaker comparison clip. There is a clip where he swops the 112 cabinet to another (of smaller size) and everything else remains the same (speaker, mic placement, playing..). Listen to how it killed the speaker's tone.
